According to this weeks Accrington Observer our beloved borough has succumbed to some rather alternative spellings of place names. I refer to the story on page 2 about a house fire rescue. The house was in a part of the borough which I have never heard of, namely Osowaldtwistle. On Page 8 in a story about rowdy bus yobs, it seems that Accrington has now been double-barrelled and is now known as Accring-ton. Has the council made these changes and not consulted the people of the borough? Or is it that our esteemed local rag is desperately short of a decent proof reader....:D

I don't think they employ one at all these days Lettie. I was told it wasn't necessary since it's all computerised and they have a spell checker.

Eye halve a spelling chequer;
It came with my pea sea;
It plainly marques four my revue
Miss steaks eye kin knot sea.
Eye strike a key and type a word
And weight four it to say
Weather eye am wrong oar write -
It shows me strait aweigh.
As soon as a mist ache is maid
It nose bee fore two long,
and eye can put the error rite
Its rare lea ever wrong.
Eye have run this poem threw it;
I am shore your pleased two no
Its letter perfect awl the weigh,
My chequer tolled me sew.

A good proof reader...... there were some mistakes in last weeks too.......I just can't remember what they were........(it's the Old-Timers Disease you know)

Just finished this week's Observer. I usually wait for a second hand copy to be pased on to me on Saturday, but decided l'd treat myself.:(

As well as proof readers, I think some good journalists wouldn't go amiss. Page after page of Confirmation photos? Nice for the children and their families but not at all interesting for anyone else.

The last couple of weeks have featured published stories without confirmation of all the facts, which then resulted in a retraction the following week. 'Gay hounded out of home,' being one example were all the facts only came out after publication. Same this week regarding Church and Oswaldtwistle Rotary Club and the Wizard Carnival. A phone call asking for a reaction would make for better journalism than rehashing the story with all the facts the following week, surely?

Oh, for the pre tabloid days when The Observer was weighty as well as local and worthy.

Happy to save my 45 pence next week, thanks. :)

I read that drivel once.

Come on Observer, give the space to Marg P. or Acrylic-bob, anyone of those two could entertain and really provoke some thought.

I once dismissed Gayle Knight's column as l thought it wasn't really aimed at me, but it was a darn sight more entertaining and well written than this Mr Angry drivel. The only people it leaves angry are the readers.

Who writes it the office cleaner?

i know its old hat-but once of a day the accrington observor was a damn good paper,out twice a week and i bet sold better,than the tripe nowadays.

Thank you!

:( It was when you first joined or just before, and l said it in one of the threads re: the bloody panoptican.

Wasn't meant personally. l did read your column, but it just seemed more aimed at females than males. Was much better than so called 'lifestyle' columnists in the Sunday papers, and l do remember how powerfully you wrote about vandalism, which l thought was excellent. :)

F****** spell checker. It should have read “fancy a bit of chit chat”. However, Mr Handsome. I think you have been spending for to much time with these here women on here and have lost touch with your masculine sensitivity. Now. I am a very outgoing and open individual, but I must inform you that I have no intention of allowing you to touch any sensitivity of mine. “Said in a deep gruff northern masculine voice” I am however, more than happy to accept your friendship has it is with all good and true men of these northern lands. You may avail yourself of my time, beer, vehicle and even money. But you leave the man alone. The only man in me is me, any shenanigans is reserved for the fairer sex. Fancy a pint with the girls?
