I walked down Church Street towards the entrance to the Arcade. How do you look nonchalant sporting a black eye and a pink eye patch?
It was about five to seven. I reckoned that if I got there first and he saw me and decided that it was all a big mistake then he could turn on his heel and walk away and no-one would be hurt.
As I got nearer my stomach was doing somersaults......if he did want to take me out how would I explain what had happened? I would sound like a real tearaway if I told the truth, but I make an awful liar.......I glow red with guilt.
Oh good gracious me...... he was already waiting! There was nothing for it I had to go and brave it out.
He smiled when he saw me, and then his face changed to one of concern......... I wasn't even sure if he knew my name.......I certainly could not remember telling his friend my name.
I introduced myself and said that if he didn't want to take me out because of the black eye, well, it was fine by me. A bit on the high horse I was.
No, no.....he still wanted to take me out......and where would I like to go. I told him that in view of the circumstances it probably would be best if we went to the pictures...... a black eye isn't really that noticeable in the dark.
We went to the Odeon.......and we went upstairs. You don't get much chance to chat in the pictures either. He just held my hand at first, and then his arm slid round the back of my seat and onto my shoulder.
That was the only physical contact there was on that date.
I really thought it would be the only time we ever went out. I can't remember what the film was but we left before it finished. D*** walked me home.
He told me that he had been walking past the shop on the other side of the road just looking at me and wanting to ask me out..... but he thought that I would not want to go out with him.
He mentioned to his friend R***** that he fancied a girl who worked in town and his friend R***** said ' let's go and have a look at her then' and that was when his mate chatted me up.
I asked about R***** and D*** said that he was a bit of a jack the lad, married with a baby son......had to get married, but that he was a good mate and they rode motor bikes together. D*** said that all the girls fancied R***** and that he never got a look in.
I learned that D*** had an older brother and a sister in Australia. Then D*** asked about the black eye......I made up some story about getting something off the Wardrobe and it falling on me.
By this time I was almost home. I thought that it would be 'so long, and thanks for the date' but D*** said he would like to meet me again and asked about taking me out on the Sunday afternoon.
He said he would come for me on his bike and we could go for a ride somewhere. I agreed and we made another date for the Sunday afternoon.
When I got home I was so surprised that he had enjoyed my company enough to ask me out again.
When I went to work the following day, my boss asked how things had gone. I think she was half expecting me to say that I hadn't turned up.
She asked if I had liked this guy......and had he kissed me. I told her that we had only held hands and talked and that I thought he was very good looking.
She asked me if I was glad that I had gone on the date.....I had to tell her that I was very glad. to be continued......
