In my last blog I confessed to having a pathological dislike of asking for help.
I had another incidence where this issue raised it's ugly head.
Over our bed we have a light fitting with three bulbs in it.
Two of the bulbs are fairly accessible, but one of them isn't. Well, not to me anyway.
It might have been easy for himself to get to, he is taller and has a much longer reach than me.
The other evening I went upstairs to put some washing away.
I switched on the bedroom light and there was soft explosion.......and one of the spots had blown.
Now which one do you think it might have been?
Right, first time. It was the one I would struggle to reach.
I went downstairs to tell him about the bulb having blown.
He was in a recumbent position on the sofa, and looked as though that was how he was staying.
I got the ladders out and positioned them as close to the bed and as near to the light fitting as I could.
I held onto the support at the top of the ladder and leaned over as far as I could.
At least I was sure that if I fell off, I would land on the mattress.
I could just about reach the bulb.
It was a screw fitting, but it fell out into my hand...leaving the screw collar firmly attached to the light fitting.
I went back down and told him of the dilemma.
He didn't offer any solution, or for that matter seem the slightest bit interested.....he was engrossed in a 1980 plonk episode of 'Minder'.
I knew that somewhere I had a pair of long handled sponge holders(from my nursing days - don't ask!).
I found them and went back to do battle with the screw fitting that was stuck.
After much sweating, and mild swearing (is 'chuffing'a swear word?) I managed to release the screw cap and to replace the bulb.
Did he appreciate my efforts that saved him a job?
What do you think?
All he could say was 'how many more times do you think you will be going up and down the stairs'
I cannot tell you what my response was...decency forbids......and I did seriously consider putting the scrapings from my Ped-egg into his bedtime drink.
It is a good job I am an independent baggage....he was no help at all!
