I said in my last blog that poverty shaped my life.
I learned that to survive you have to work.......work gives you a self respect that is like nothing else. If you can't get up and go to work, then why should someone else support you? If you are ill, then that is different. You should expect some support....but only as a temporary help until you are well.
The benefits system is never a career option.
(This is just my rule...for myself.)
I have learned that you cannot have what can't be paid for. It doesn't matter how much you long for that red dress, that gold watch, that new sofa, the night out, the great holiday......If you cannot pay for it then you have to save up until you can.
I have learned that being poor doesn't mean you are a lesser person, or less valuable. Being poor doesn't mean you have to be less educated......you can borrow books from public libraries....spend time developing yourself...and your intellect. It may pay you handsomely in the future.
Being financially poor doesn't mean your life has to be impoverished....there are still joys to be had, good things to be enjoyed(health is one of these, friendship is another).
I have learned that anyone who judges you on what you own, or where you live, is a very shallow person and they are truly poor...in spirit.
I have learned that you are the architect of your own fate....and persistence pays off.
Deciding what you want out of life is often the first step to getting it.
I have learned that it is best to be self reliant...independent, but that there are times when everyone needs a hand. Be ready to hold out your hand...to give someone a bit of help. People helped me and my family...we have to be willing to give something back.
Share what you have with someone less fortunate....but don't let the sharing make you feel superior.
Who taught me these things....? Poverty did.
