Blasts from the past.

A couple of threads recently have got my mind travelling.
The Nostalgia thread, which has lots of stuff in it - but what got my mind wandering was the thing about Coltsfoot Rock.

A few years ago(it must be more than six years) we were in Oz. I think it must've been for the wedding of my great niece(calling her that makes me feel old), while we were there I saw a good deal on the Qantas Website.......5 days in Adelaide at a very good price.
I booked online and we flew the following day.
We had a small but well appointed apartment right in the centre of the city.
It was the end of the summer, the days were warm and the nights were cool enough to sleep....and anyway we had air-con.

Himself and I would spend leisurely days wandering around the shops......sitting on the banks of the river.
Down one of the side streets in the city we found a sweet shop that sold only English sweets.......there on a shelf were Sarsaparilla tablets, licquorice sticks and coltsfoot rock......in a jar marked STOCKLEYS.

I never imagined that I would travel to the other side of the world and find STOCKLEYS sweets on sale.
What is more the place was doing a roaring trade.
Apparently Adelaide has a large ex-pat population and they like their english sweets.
Before leaving I bought some Dolly Mixtures(Bassetts) and some Edinburgh Rock to take back to Melbourne with me.
My sister in law said she could not get Dolly mixtures in Melbourne,so she was delighted with this gift of Dolly mixtures in a paper bag.

The other thread is the one about Taywil Mangles.

Again it came as a great surprise to find one of these in the back yard of the house my sister in law was renting as a holiday home....in Corowa NSW.

I say it was in her back yard......it wasn't a backyard like we have....it was a two acre field with peach, nectarine and lemon trees....but they called it a back yard.
My sister in law and her husband liked this house so much that they eventually bought it and went to live there permanently.

The Mangle had an enamel table top and was pressed into service each time they had a barbie.......the barbie irons and the meat plates......suitably covered to deter marauding flies were put on the enamel table top.
12,000 miles that mangle had travelled.
The best of it was, my sister in law hadn't realized it was from her home town until I pointed it out to her.

amazing what yer come across, when yeh least expect too, that to me is one of lifes pleasures.;)
