New 4 part documentary started tonight on BBC1 Jeremy Paxman doing a first rate job of presenting it i reckon. well worth watching, learnt much i wasn't aware of, can't wait fer the rest of em.:)

I agree!
Wife and daughter can't stand Paxman but I think he's one of the best presenters on telly...!!!

Any one see the documentary about the life of Kaiser Wilhelm (before Christmas) - the man who has taken the blame for it all? He was the grandson of our good old Queenie = Victoria.

Funny how they call it the Great War? When it was the Horrible war! Seeing your mates eaten by rats etc

Not really Kes, there's more than one meaning to the word.

great (grāt)adj.

great·er, great·est

1. Very large in size.
2. Larger in size than others of the same kind.
3. Large in quantity or number: A great throng awaited us. See Synonyms at large.
4. Extensive in time or distance: a great delay.
5. Remarkable or outstanding in magnitude, degree, or extent: a great crisis.
6. Of outstanding significance or importance: a great work of art.
7. Chief or principal: the great house on the estate.
8. Superior in quality or character; noble: "For he was great, ere fortune made him so" (John Dryden).
9. Powerful; influential: one of the great nations of the West.
10. Eminent; distinguished: a great leader.
11. Grand; aristocratic.
12. Informal Enthusiastic: a great lover of music.
13. Informal Very skillful: great at algebra.
14. Informal Very good; first-rate: We had a great time at the dance.
15. Being one generation removed from the relative specified. Often used in combination: a great-granddaughter.
16. Archaic Pregnant.

And I'd say that several of the above are extremely accurate as a suitable description. :)

Unfortunately it's on a bit late for me over here but I reckon I'll be able to catch it 2nd/3rd time around when they broadcast it again at a more reasonable time.

And if the current succession law had been in place, he would have been King of England Whatever.

Episode 2 just been on, good as the first un i thought, very interesting n informative.:)

And there were those who thought people made money out of the war!?

Anyone see "Royal Cousins at War" pt 2 on BBC 2 tonight - about how the King of England - the Kaiser of German and the Tzar of Russia were all part of the same family spending many happy summers together till they decided to have a family punch up; the cost millions of lives.

What an excellent summary of yet another subject you obviously know nothing about!
:(

I watched the first episode of Paxman's presentation , but the week before I had watched on Youtube the 26 episodes of the 1964 BBC documentary "The Great War" which I found very informative , and I recommend it .

Reckon most people wi any oil in their lamp, knows damn well people make money outa wars, which has sod all to do wi the T.V. series discussion,

It would appear your oils run out :D- of course it has to do with the program in question as it was in the subject matter! In fact this country only just finished paying off the debt to the Americans for the 2nd World War a few years back!

Well if the finance of any war is relevant to you, that says it all.I was more interested in the hardships and how people coped n got on wi things, It gave me even more respect fer em,

I had to look up on the internet to find out what you are talking about. I love documentaries but I won't find this one for some time in the US. My grandpa's brother died in this war.
