We had a bit of a lively approach to our landing in Lanzarote. It only lasted a couple of minutes but I'm sure that several people actually screamed as we were being buffeted around. The landing itself was smooth and after picking up our luggage we headed outside for a taxi. Ten minutes later we were at our apartment in Puerto del Carmen. It was a clean looking little complex with traditional Canarian style rooms. They were very spacious with wooden windows and doors and wooden furniture. The thing with the wooden furniture is that it is not overly comfy. Our beds made our backs ache with the wooden frames and thin matresses, I'm sure that they were designed by the inquisitor Torquemada because I'd have spilled all of my secrets after a tortuous night on one of those beds.

There was a couple of small swimming pools and a nice little bar which did meals. We had a quick bite to eat in the pool bar before going off to explore the town and buy provisions. We spent the first couple of days exploring Puerto del Carmen. It is a typical Canarian holiday resort with a long strip of tacky souvenir shops, supermarkets, cafes, restaurants and bars lining the sea front. There were a lot of Chinese and Mexican restaurants all touting for custom. I'm not a fan of Mexican restaurant food as I don't like peppers and chillis. I sincerely believe that the reason why over a million Mexicans a year try to escape to the US is to get away from the food.

There were some Italian restaurants and a few generic ones which served a variety of different foods. We found an absolute gem of a place on one of the back streets though. It was called L'Arao (the Plough), it did the best Chataubriand..... it just melted in your mouth. We were so impressed that we booked in there for our last night. One of the other things that we liked were the Canarian potatos. They reminded me of the little hot potato stand that used to be on Accy market when I was a kid. They were delicious and came with various sauces (mojos)......mmmmm.

We didn't explore Puerto del Carmen every day, we did manage to have some time on the beach and have a rest but the old feet did become a bit itchy, so we decided to explore the island..
