Chico.

Ma's little dog Chico died this morning.
We knew that the end was coming because over the last six weeks Chico had been having little fits.....but getting bigger.
I asked ma if she would like me to take him to the vets, but she got upset and said that he wouldn't come home...and she wasn't quite ready to let him go.
He did not seem to be in any pain at all...and once the fit was over he was his usual self...eating well and quite nimble on his feet.

Anyway, the phone went just after 8am this morning(never a good sign...thought it was Ma who was in trouble) and it was Ma....she could barely tell me what had happened.....but in the end she told me he had died cuddled in her arms.

Ma is heartbroken(and I am sad because there is nothing I can say or do to make it better)......Chico had been her little companion for the last twenty years...which is a good age for a chihuahua.
I told her that he had had a lovely life with her...he was loved, he was fed only the best stuff(roast chicken, roast beef all the kind of stuff we humans like...he even used to help her to eat a spud pie). He is in doggy heaven now chasing squirrels....while Ma is left with just her memories of him.

Losing a member of our family be they human or animal is never easy & though they be gone from our home they'll ever be within our hearts.

With eye upraised his master's look to scan,
The joy, the solace, and the aid of man:
The rich man's guardian and the poor man's friend,
The only creature faithful to the end.

Yes, my thoughts too.
We can't be sad because they are gone, we have to be happy that we had the time with them.....and yes, animals are part of the family, just as much as children are.

Margaret, I am so sorry to hear about your mum's little dog, her companion for so long. How sad to lose such a friend. Please give her an extra hug from me. Thinking of you all.

Thank you Dotti....I will, and I will tell her it comes from the other side of the globe.
I never saw her cry when we lost my dad(I am sure she did cry, but when none of us were there to see) but she was crying this morning...but making a good fist of holding it all together.
It is as if we should not cry for our animals...that they are lesser beings...not in my book they aren't.

My heart bleeds for your Ma, Margaret. My dogs are my life[I have no family etc] and I Know how painful this will be for her. I am a stanger to you but please give her my sympathy. The joy of memories will ease the trauma eventually. Best wishes.

only just seen this, am so sorry, when we lost Oscar 2 years back it was heartbreaking. still miss him.

Cashy, it has knocked her sideways a bit.
She had Chico cremated and his ashes were returned today.
I asked her if she would get another dog.....Surprisingly she has not ruled this out....But it would have to be small and also an older dog.....not so rumbustious.
I am keeping a look out for her.
