I hope you have all had a really good Christmas. As for us, we had a lovely day. Even though three of my brood weren’t there because of work commitments there were still 16 of us (yes, we certainly HAVE done our bit for Australia).
My middle son and his partner hosted the day this year - my family take it in turns to host Christmas Day but they all contribute to the feast.
Had a long, long, lunch that started at about 1 p.m. and went on all day. It was a day full of love and caring – and lots of laughter. As always there was too much food but all very yummy.
My dear old fellow held up very well – certainly not as robust as in previous years and not up to a game of badminton or cricket, but joined in the celebrations – and was well looked after.
My instructions to the family were that there was to be no doom and gloom and no sad faces and for once they all took notice of me and did as they were told. That makes a change!
Secret Santa was reintroduced this year – he’s been missing for a year or two but we decided to bring him back. Lots of chuckles when presents were unwrapped.
Talking of presents though, I had bought his nibs an electronic foot massager as I thought this would make his legs feel good and ease tired muscles (as per the wording on the box), and a grooming kit to encourage him to keep up appearances. However, on Saturday I thought I might give him the foot gadget early so that he could use it for a couple of days before Christmas Day.
Well we unpacked it and set it up but he got no response from it, so I then decided to read the instruction book that had been in the bottom of the box. Looking for ‘why doesn’t it work’ I came across ‘do not use this machine if…’ and it listed a number of reasons that if these applied to you then you shouldn’t use the massager. The only two on the list that don’t apply to him were being pregnant and breast-feeding! So I had to retrieve the plastic bags that the bits and pieces had been packed in from the rubbish and repack the thing as best I could. Will be returning this tomorrow – no warnings on the box itself, by the way.
Wasn’t happy about that – but the other present was fine, as were the gifts that he received during the day.
So Christmas Day has been and gone yet again, and if at any time during the day any of my lot thought that maybe, just maybe, the man who is the head of our family might, just might, be absent next year they kept that thought to themselves and made sure that this year at least he had one heck-of-a good time.
The chemo journey starts on Friday, and who knows – miracles do sometimes happen. Anyway staying positive we have just renewed his driver’s licence for two years. Thought that 10 years (the maximum) was unrealistic, one year was pessimistic and two years optimistic. So let the journey begin….
