during the war( and I can only go off what I have been told as I was not around back then) the population were subjct to rationing and shortages.
People had to do without things because they were not to be had.....oranges, banana's...onions,coffee were all in short supply. In fact Coffee was quite a luxury and it may not have been real coffee, but the ersatz stuff made from acorns(I think) and to hear tell it was nothing at all like coffee.

That said, I do not ever recall being told that folk came to blows or indulged in fisticuffs over staples.

The current supermarket situation put me in mind of the wartime privations.
Though I am pretty sure back then the folks just shrugged and made do with what was available.

However, the sharp eyed members of the community during wartime would see a delivery of oranges...or banana's or onions and the word would go round the locality like wildfire.....people would lean over the backyard wall...knock on the door using the clothes prop to make sure you got a chance at getting whatever was the much longed for item.

My next door neighbour has a little boy...just a toddler, still in nappies.
She has got quite frustrated as she has not bought into the panic buying, figuring that nappies would not be hard to come by...so now she is down to her last few she is getting a bit of a sweat on because there are none to be had.
Himself had to go up to Gt Harwood on an errand and noticed that Aldi had a delivery wagon pulling ito the store.....this delivery will not hit the shelves until tomoorow( he asked in store about the nappies)....but he has gone next door and told the lass that there will be some on the shelves tomorrow morning and that if she wants to get up there early...we will take her other child to school for her....so it put me in mind of the wartime experience of ...The Co-Op's got oranges....
But Aldi have no paracetamol!

Margaret, I do remember the war years even though I was only a little girl - and people did just get on with things. If it wasn't available or you didn't have enough coupons then you got something else. Not sure how my mother always managed it but we never went hungry.

I also remember skimming the cream off the milk, putting it into a container, and shaking and shaking and shaking it until it turned to something that resembled butter! I hated the stuff but it was a luxury for my mum. She deserved it.

I also remember the newspaper squares all strung up.....

...but NEVER did people act in the way some are behaving today. They are a disgrace.
