I had been told that Ma would probably be out of Hospital on Monday....but her blood results just were not right so she was told that maybe Tuesday.
I had been up to the house , the heating was on, there was fresh bread and milk all ready for her....a home cooked roast pork dinner...but no crackling...that is banned(much to Ma's disgust).
I went up to the house Tuesaday morning to run the hoover over(except it is a Gtech)....and to give the kitchen the once over.....fluff the pillows up...do the little bits of tittivating that I had missed during my carpet shampooing blitz.
Then when I got home mid morning I rang the ward.
The consultant's round was still in progress...so no news...ring back in an hour.
I rang back....still awaiting results.
I got ready for visiting feeling that this was going to be another day when she was going to be dealing with disappointment.
While out and about during the morning I bought Ma a soft night shirt from M&S.
I figured she would need a clean nightshirt...and I had forgotten to pick one up while I was at the house.
I reckoned that if I bought her this she would come home...and if she didn't come home then it would not be wasted.....yes, I know that is fuzzy feminine logic.
I was just about to set off for visiting when the phone rang. It was the ward........she could be discharged(see i told you...new nightie not required).
I picked up her case with her clothes in and headed off to RBH.
When I got there the staff nurse said that Ma could come home but her medicines to take home had not come up from pharmacy.
Because of the bank holiday they were experiencing a bit of a backlog.
So we waited.
Son in law was going to be picking us up when he finished work at 4.30 so there was no hurry.
The medicines arrived at something to 4 and I trundled Ma down to the main entrance.
We sat there and watched the world go by. Ma's nostrils were tempted by the aroma from Costa Coffee.
I asked her if she would like something......'yes, a small hot chocolate'
I went and got it for her and she sipped it while we waited.
It wasn't long before we spotted son in law and I took her out and got her stuff loaded into the car.
She had a bit more stuff to take home than she arrived with.
Most folk get a plastic toy in their breakfast cereal....Ma got a wheelie zimmer frame (well, NO of course it didn't come in the cornflakes...it is just me being a tad whimsical. I'm allowed...I have had a trying ten days or so)
Before long we were going up the hill.
I went and unlocked the door, took her case in...while son in law assisted ma with her frame...and held onto her elbow. She was a bit weak and wobbly.
I forgot to tell you that on the previous day we(Greg and I) had taken the covers off the sofa.......intention to wash and freshen them up.
This was something of a sweaty swearing feat(but we did it under our breath, my swear words were tame...damn. blast etc)...but we did it eventually.
Now we were back with the said covers.....clean dry and smelling of laundry liquid.
Now we had to put the blooming things back on.
I wish there had been someone filming our efforts as I am sure it would have been a smash hit on you tube.
It created much hilarity for Ma...and she was directing the operation from the comfort of an easy chair.
We got them back on after some more huffing and chuffing.
I asked Ma if she needed anything......'No get off home both of you. I will be alright now'
So we left her to it.
I went up to the house this morning to take Chico home and when we got there the front door was still locked.
I had one of those heart sink moments, but unlocked the door and gingerly went inside.
I could hear no sounds...no movement.
I went upstairs to find Ma just emerging from her bedroom tousled headed and eyes like cuts in a pigs bum.
She had slept all night.....with only one wake up for the loo(unheard of...her normal is five or six times to get up for a wee) she said she felt really refreshed.
She went and dealt with her ablutions while I went downstairs and put the kettle on and put some bread under the grill.
She has asked me what time I am serving breakfast tomorrow
.......I told her tomorrow you will be doing your breakfast.
But I will be up to see her and check she is alright.
she is having a stairlift installed sometime next week so I will be there when they do that...and I am also going to be her Mrs Overall for the forseeable future.
I am just SO relieved to have her home.
