Dinner or Tea

Try using the other hand. If your abnormal bend is still causing you difficulties consult your GP, as you may need corrective surgery.

"I do beg your pardon, please forgive me for interrupting but would you have a spare serviette? I wouldn't ask but the lavatory seems to have run out of toilet paper, I have tried a napkin but that just seems to get stuck in the bend, I only came into this cafe for some tea with my dinner but now seem to be stuck in the bog so I'll never get to drink my char or eat my meal!".

Stop moaning and go and get a spare bog-roll. :p

It varies with me at home its dinner and tea, at work its lunch, and if we go out to eat in the evening its dinner! I'm not sure about the pardon thing, I hate Ellie saying "what", maybe its just because she says it all the time even when she's heard me!

Being a southerner I was always taught breafast, lunch and dinner, but now I am up North I have got used to the term 'tea' but really that means tea & stickies on the lawn dahling! cucumber sandwiches with the crusts cut awff! but now I get a butty! oh yes & the brew thing was totally weird to me.........as was gravy on chips? whats all that about? and the fact that if you went into a chip shop up here you didn't have to specify what fish you wanted it was just 'fish'!

When I was at home it was breakfast, dinner and tea. When I moved out of home it changed to breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Lavatory is toilet, or sometimes the bog, and any terms you can think of if misheard, ie eh? what? or an expressive grunt sometimes does the trick!

Tea is the term for the warm brown stuff wot I drink!

#20. Don't know how my thread got down to toilet talk tee hee, however, our newspaper was on string (posh like) and the ink stayed on the paper then.

Hate to resorrect an old thread .. seems self-indulgent, however, my jaw dropped today when son, 'in a public place', announced that he must visit the bathroom !! Aaagh are the Yanks coming or summat ?? Preferred when he said was going for a slash (am I allowed that word ?)

Let me see. Breakfast,dinner,tea.
I taught my Children to say Pardon or at least tried to.
They always said " Wot."
I say "I need t go t Loo."
Or can I use your toilet. Depends were I am.
I use quilted paper now but My Nanna used to use newspaper on a string.

What's wrong with "Pardon?" eh?

Being married to a Southerner doesn't half confuse life. We always had breakfast dinner and tea but now we don't have any tea and eat later and it's called dinner.

According to me teacakes are a lighter version of muffins. According to him teacakes are actually little cakes with icing on or summat and according to my girls muffins are what I used to call buns only bigger. To me a sausage roll is a thing made with puff pastry. To him it's a sandwich made with a bread roll and sausages.

What's wrong with chips and gravy? He was amazed by that too. They don't have meat pies down there but they do have a weird plastic sausage thing on sale in all the chip shops.

What is it with southern kebabs with all the salad on top so it falls out? Surely it's better on the bottom where the meat can hold it in and where all the meat juices flow down over it and flavour it? I've noticed that Toppings do southern kebabs. Guess where Busman buys his kebabs?!

To me a jam sandwich is a cake. Bread n jam a jam butty.
It's Casserole in the oven. Stew on top.
Mmmm.
Could start a new thread about food differences.
Dabs are called scallops were I come from.

id hate to ever lose my northern 'twangs'; im extremely proud of where ive grown up and the way i talk; and i am now putting it into fuller practise with the uprise in people my age becoming more posh ??! whats up with that?!! i didnt know we were being invaded by the army of southern shandy boys drinking lager tops with painted toes.....
how very strange...

hey as long as i get food in my gob i dont care what name they give the meal lol

Thought you Jocks were fed neeps and tatties for dinner with a clootie dumpling for pudding. Porridge stirred with a spurtle for breakfast.

When all is said and done, does it really matter? Say what you feel like. Speak naturally as long as you can make yourself understood.

I blame Nancy Mitford, myself, with her pronouncements about U and None-U speech. The socially aspirant suddenly became so very careful about what they said, in case they betrayed their humble origins. The funny thing is Nancy admitted, later, that she was just pulling everyone's leg. ;)
