Donations

Why don't you just put a donation link via paypal or something, so that if people wish to show their appreciation of the board by donating they can? Another board I am a member of does this and the little perk he gives out is letting people choose their own custom user title. Nothing too major to make those who choose not to donate feel bad, but I think its a nice little thank you for those who do.

But what would be the advantage of having ur own customer user title and please give me an example of this

Its just something daft really Steven. On another board that I am a member of, we have bloke with the custom user title "Sex Machine" under his user name.

An example would be yourself "Steven" as your user name and "Doesn't understand what custom user titles are" as your custom user title. (jk):D

There are no massive advantages or disadvantages as to having one or not, its just a bit of fun.

£10

cheap at half the price.:D
I would have no problem with this, the entertainment value alone from the Accy web is second to none but----! I do not have a Paypal account, do not give out my credit card details on-line so the only way I could pay is by knocking on a door and handing over my tenner.......a little difficult when Roy is in Germany:rolleyes:

Also, the Accy web is the best in the area, but how many users would go to one of the other "local" sites rather than put their hand in their pockets??...and how many new users would the Accy web attract?

We have members from all over the world and if they are as careful as myself in not sending money via the net, how do they pay?

We all appreciate the work Roy puts in to make the site "simply the best" but by enforcing a payment, it would ultimately kill off the growth of members in the future.

Oooh - I meant I was charging a Roy a tenner if he implemented my idea - call it a consultancy fee.:D

And like I say I was merely suggesting it. On my other board, donations are purely voluntary. The user title thing is given as a thank you, but you don't lose anything if you choose not to donate as its nothing that would majorly change the AccyWeb experience.

Voluntary donations isn't a bad idea but I'm not sure I like the idea of making a distinction between those who have donated and those who haven't. It could discourage people.

It's about time you did get yourself a paypal account Busman. You might want to buy something off eBay! :D

A distinction between who had donated and who hadn't wouldn't have to be so obvious as a custom user title. The people who had donated could perhaps access information as to who had given or taken karma from them. Maybe then the people who routinely take karma from others without giving reason or name would think twice if they were unsure as to whether or not their intended recipient of bad karma could tell it was them or not. The karma issue seems to have made some waves recently maybe this would be a possible solution.:D

yeah but surely karma is a way off telling sombody how u rate thier overall contribution to the forum so to let people see this confidencial info i dont believe is ok

Also dont think many people would fork out for it

The Karma issue although confidential at this moment in time doesn't mean to say that it needs to stay that way. When you look back at the multitude of posts on this forum regarding karma, it seems to point to the fact that this currently confidential system is being abused. I would have no objection to somebody taking karma from anyone who is being blatantly offensive but to rob karma for tit for tat purposes because you believe that that person has taken some from you is not a reflection of their overall contribution to the forum. If people wish to donate a small sum to enable them to see who had given/taken karma. It may help to make the system fairer as the people donating may wish to take karma from those who did it to them, but at least they'll be taking it from the right folk...:D

As my mother always says - don't say anything behind anyones back that you wouldn't say to their face. As long as you are not abusing the karma system, then you shouldn't care whether the info can be seen or not.

Also, I want to clarify what my intentions were in starting this thread. It was just a comment carried over from another thread in General that Willow suggested I post in here. I wasn't meaning that anyone should "fork out" for any special features, that implies that people are obligated to donate. Like I have said before I suggested it as a purely voluntary action. The custom user thing was something pretty insignificant to use as an example token thanks on Roys part is all.

My thought on that are simply that I wouldn't like people to feel like second class members if they weren't able to contribute. You may argue that they can afford a PC and internet connection, but they may be members of several message boards and not really in a position to contribute to their running costs.

Having an "invisible thank you" is a way round it and the karma one seems like a good idea. I still think tit-for-tat reducing of karma isn't a valid reason even if they target the correct person. If someone takes karma because they disagree with a point I make (such as the time I lost a point for posting "free parking" as being an Accy asset) it wouldn't make sense for me to take karma from them unless I disagreed strongly with a point they made. Just taking it because they took it from me is silly, but at least taking it from the right person would be a slight improvement on taking it from the person one presumes took it from them.

yeah im not saying that i give out bad karma or anything and just want it to be hiodden i just dont think people will pay for that service
