So our little duo became a trio. lt was really very awkward. Me, Willy and his team mate Jurgen, who had no idea he'd just become a gooseberry. All Willy and l wanted to do was hold hands under the table, hidden of course so we wouldn't frighten any passing horse on Kensington High Street! l became the tour guide to eighties London. It was awful, l wanted romance in these two short days, and all l got was trawling around Carnaby St. only stopping to take photos of Punks in the Kings Rd. Punks by this time had ceased to be cutting edge, they were just as ordinary as Pearlie Kings and Queens, relying on tourists giving then cash after remarking how cute/weired they were, and then imortalising their image to show their friends back in Idaho. Jurgen said London was dirty and poor, why didn't ladies wear fur coats? lt's a good job he wasn't in Liverpool!
Time flew. ln what seemed like a few hours l was back at Gatwick saying goodbye, wanting to hug Willy but only managing a sort of hand shake/ bear hug sort of thing. Cue me, eyes on the brink of tears on the train all the way back to college.
We managed for me to go to Austria a couple of times but eventually we drifted apart, unlike other stories of love conquering all adversity, ours didn't. We did stay in touch as friends, he came to stay with me when l was living in London, but by this time we were two different people, different countries, different worlds.
Besides my relationship with the Peer [who someone tried to find in the obituaries- l changed the dates and time scale to protect him,] Willy was the only other relationship l 've had in my life.
l'm better being single, or am l? l can play Maria Callas in the early hours eating chip butties, l can go on holiday when l want, l can be grumpy and no one knows- but theres also no one there to hold my hand when l'm shaking like a leaf in a very strong, scary wind.
