Which endearment makes you wince ? ... I hate people calling me 'dear' ... well, if said in condescending posh accent.\______/

I don't mind chuck, luv, honey, darling, and babe makes me purr like a kitten.

yes I dislike pal, and mate, infact everything.
I only ever called my latest ex huni. my previous was darling, a bit more traditional. now I'm waiting to meet my babe.

ah thats a local one, thats mainly north west isn't it, here its youth with an f youf, as in 'ya alrite youf ows it gooin. aya bin down yum yet.' we do speak english, honest :D

Derby is one that drifts over this way, which is 'duck' 'meduck' for both sexes, which my uncle uses a lot even though he's born here, and it nearly got him started on one night when he went in a pub and said have ya got change for the phone me duck. she told her regulars that he'd called her a duck, and they were ready to pounce. He came back from the phone and said thanks me duck. dunno what happened but it must have got sorted, I think his girl friend over heard and explained just in time.

aye n in yarkshur its " love " can remember a gaffer on site callin me love ...i shat it i thought he was tryna tap me up :D

I don't really mind any of the endearments. What I do hate is being shouted of as oi or being whistled at to get my attention (not wolf whistles I'm too old) If folk are too lazy or ignorant to use my name then I'm to ignorant to answer!

I hate it when people come to see me in a car and sit outside blowing the horn.
If they have come to see me then they can get out and come to the door.
this includes taxis

I realy realy hate being addressed as MS on letters and things,, i want to scream that i am MRS not MS.........

I call all women "Luv" and all blokes "Mate".. When I was asking the Arsenal ladies team to pose for pics after they won the cup on wed night I got some very odd looks when I said over here Luv or thanks luv or smile luv ...... I guess its not used that much down souf:)

I know you do, it reminded me when I was writing it kipax :)
No , even in the midlands it's not the done thing. Love here is a couple thing, it's what people call their partners.
Your not yorkshire origin are you kipax?

I should just add that the reason I dislike 'mate' is because it reminds me of cocky londoners and essex people. Not that they all are, but a lot are. Essex girls are funny though, they always make me smile.

I think it's all down to who's doing the calling - if someone I meet calls me 'mate' or something like that within a few minutes of meeting them then I don't like it but if it's someone that I've known for a while and they do it then I like it.

Never called a woman mate.... and no madhatter i aint got any yorkshire in me... ya cheeky long haired blah blah ... does that mean I ahve spoken to you hatter?

It depends who utters the endearment.

There used to be a checkout woman of about 20 something at KwikSave in Blackburn (it’s not there anymore) who called me ‘cock’ and that used to rankle. I could accept the term from someone older than me but not from her. In fact she aggrannoyed (aggravated and annoyed combined) me so much I would not use her checkout even if it were empty. I think that other older people must have felt the same because she rarely had more than one or two customers at a time, that I saw.

I’m with you on names Debbie J. But it is not being too ignorant to answer. I mean how can you answer if someone is trying to attract your attention by using a name that is not yours?

I don’t like strangers calling me mate or pal. I’m not their mate or pal. I’ve never seen them before so how could I be. As for ‘bud’ I’m not growing on a tree or out of the soil.

James Buckley is my name with or without Mister but I respond to James, Jim, Jimmy or Buckley. I will also respond to my Internet username of jambutty but not to lazy variations.

Well I will continue to call men mate and women luv cus it just pops out without thinking..... but if i meet someone and don't know there name and want to say somehting.. what should I use?... When I say mate for example its usually part of "thanks mate" or "seeya mate" and is meant friendly..

How on earth can people get so upset or insulted at what is so obviously intended to be friendly ? I mean if something meant friendly upsets you then you may need to seriously think about stopping in more....as apposed to getting out more :)

I don't mind endearments from people who I know. From strangers....... I suppose it depends what it is. i don't like 'mate' from someone I don't know. The one endearment that I hate is 'flower,' I am the least flowery person ever. :D

Lettie you really shouldnt have put that on accyweb then... You just know whats gonna happen now.. nxt meet or whatever :)

If I can't call you luv and I cant call you flower.... Can I call you in the morning ?

hehe the old ones or the best.... and I am old :)
