Hyndburn Borough Council are big on equality according to this story in the LT Hyndburn Council in new equality drive (From Lancashire Telegraph)
I'm pleased to see there is at least one gentleman left in the world...No doubt someone will let me know, but I so far haven't really seen equal opportunities.
We have laws in place to make sure that adverts are equal in their opportunity.
But are we equal?
There seem to be talents that females master better than the male and also the opposite.
However, this paper chasing world of ours that claims we shouldn't allow a woman to be a woman, a man to be a man, seems to interfere with the two sexes actually getting on with each other.
As soon as I open a door for a woman, I'm being patronising, as soon as she shows her independance because she doesn't need a door opening for her, she's being a threat to masculinity.
In actual fact there are differences and as old fashioned as it may seem, I would rather open a door for a 'Lady', than leave it to slap in her face, but sometimes we are left with the man wondering will she be insulted? and the woman wondering, will he be insulted?
Well let's put these thoughts and differences to one side and realise,
It's so much nicer if a man can treat a woman as a lady than to have her insist on 'complete' independance.

What a great post Less, I don't think anybody in their right mind can fault what you've said (but there will) I never changed my attitude towards women, even when some decided to join Ms Greer and burnt their bras. There never has been anything wrong in opening a door for a lady or giving up your seat on a bus, walking on the outside on the footpath, and genuinely making a woman feel special, that's the way I was brought up and never saw any reason to change

As to the "usual rubbish about equal opportunities" I'd say that's a fairly accurate way of putting it -in most cases it's not what you know but who you know that counts...

You colonials are so crude. I'll bet you drive a Cadillac.
I'm just a crude V8 kinda guy .... I never got into those 'green' pork and bean can things. Of course, we don't pay as much for gas as the poor sods in the UK do.

What ever happen to giving the job to the best qualified person irrespective of sex, creed or colour, keep to those guide lines and you could never be far wrong
Which brings us back to the original post about the appointment of an anaesthetist.
If I'm going to be put under, I want the person doing it to know what they are doing. If they are there to satisfy some quota or other, how do I know they can tell the difference between Nitrous Oxide and Carbon Dioxide?
A bit like that film Green For Danger with Megs Jenkins as the baddie.....
) by which you can reach this conclusion
What you are suggesting is that affirmative action programs will lead to the hiring of incompetents, that your plane will be piloted by a blind lesbian merely because there were so few blind lesbians piloting planes, and that balance had to be acheived. Is it your argument that incompetents are being hired because of "equal opportunities"? That soon, planes will be falling out of the sky because the pilot is a blind lesbian, and the co-pilot is an octogenarian with alzheimers (we can't have ageism)? When I think of affirmative action, I don't think of the pc garbage mouthed by granola "visionaries"; I think of it as being used to address imbalances that would not be resolved without some kind of government action. A good example of systemic imbalance is that women are still being paid less than men for doing the same bloody job.
That is not always the case Eric, which a resent report verifiedThis argument of yours is drifting away from "equal opportunities". PCism really bugs my ass ... but, you seem to be going way off base when you assume that someone hired through an "equal opportunities" ad will be incompetent. I can't see any logical path (live long and prosper, by the way) by which you can reach this conclusion
