Being a singleton, friendships are very important to me. I suppose to me they are a substitute for relationships.

Like a lot of people I suppose, the number of true friends I have can be counted on one hand. People who are honest with me, sometimes brutally, and accept me unconditionally for who I am, warts and all.

As a friend, I hope I offer the same. To my friends I give everthing of myself. What I have learnt to do suprisingly over the years is be quite ruthless. Anyone who doesn't give back but just seems to take from the relationship, I cut out of my life completely. I'm quite proud of this developed skill. I spent a lot of time, especially in my twenties, cultivating friendships that really should have died a natural death. Jumping through hoops, and always trying to earn someones respect, usually by trying to be funny.

I'm lucky in a way, I'm a social person and I find it easy to make friends as aquaintances, and I love this fact.

The four people in my life that are my friends no matter what though, I thank God for, and hope they think the same.

Totally agree... I can be quite brutal sometimes with my friends, but always honest. I have been a singleton for most of my life and my friends are important to me, as are my family. I was speaking to the vicar at my mates wedding a couple of years ago, and he mentioned how sad it was that there are now more single people in the world than ever before. I couldn't keep my gob shut and quipped......... Findus would go bust if it weren't for us. :-)
