After my visit to the Tower cottage gardens, I walked into the busy main street of Shanklin.
Ma had asked me to get her some soft drinks to keep in the room, and a newspaper, and a new Mag......she had puzzled out the old one.
i bought the things she had asked for and I also saw a lovely pair of slacks in one of the shops.....her length too...so I bought them for her...my treat!
Once I had done all these things I made my way back to the hotel.
We were going to have a Bar lunch.
When I arrived back at the room Ma was sat on the balcony sunning herself...it was a real sun trap and it wasn't a bit cold.
I showed her the slacks and she was very pleased with them, but no way would she let me treat her to them.......so she rummaged in her purse and gave me the money...and said that she was really pleased that I had thought about her.
I tried to phone hubby before we went down to lunch. Just to check on the proceedings.
There was no answer, so I figured he must still be out and about...and anyway he did say that he would ring me!
Ma had her usual baked spud for lunch, with a mixed salad and home made coleslaw....washed down with a Shandy.
I chose a hot roast beef sandwich with salad and horseradish...and I had a very large glass of wine(not something I usually do in the middle of the day).
We both really enjoyed our lunch.....I mentioned to Ma that I wasn't going to bother going to Ryde......I was going to go and have a swim and a sauna instead.....Ma cautioned me to wait until my lunch had settled...so we went back up to the room.
I got out my swim things and put them in readiness. Then I lay down on the bed to let my dinner settle.......the next thing I knew it was quarter to five! I had nodded off. So no swim either. Ma said she didn't bother waking me as I had had such a restless night, she felt I needed to make up the rest.
I blamed the wine!
I went downstairs to the payphone to phone hubby, figuring this was easier that using the mobile.
He was just preparing his tea. He told me that he had been up to see the old lady, and that initially she had been dead set against going into a residential home while her husband was in hospital...anyway eventually she had been persuaded by her doctor....he had told her that it really wasn't safe for her to be on her own for such long periods, with just a carer coming in to get her up, give her lunch and then put her to bed.....so she relented and she was packed up and taken to Wellfield.
Hubby said he felt better knowing that she was warm and being fed and given hot drinks.....and he said he would sleep better that night.....'Me too' was my response
So it all looked like it was working out in the end.
Hubby asked what kind of day I had had......I told him I had napped for most of the afternoon....'Lucky sod' was his response.
I told him that I needed to conserve my strength as the day after was a full day excursion......Cowes,lunch at Appley Manor, Rosemay's Vinyard, wine tasting and Godshill.
The thing about rough times is...you know at some point it has to start getting better.
