I felt like Peter.....

I wandered up and down in the arrivals hall.......I felt like Peter when he betrayed Jesus.........the man I loved was being searched and goodness knows what and all I could do was beat a hasty retreat.

After about half an hour (a damn long time when you are worried) D*** appeared looking red faced and definitely a bit dishevilled.
he said to me 'They opened my case and threw everything on the floor........they searched through all that and then they asked me to go behind a screen and get undressed to my underwear.......they searched everywhere.......and I MEAN everywhere' 'Let's get out of here' he said.

The same Limo was waiting for us to take us back home....... the driver told us that he had been waiting for more than an hour.
D*** then regaled him with the tale of being body searched by the customs officials.
D*** was told that the Amsterdam run was very strictly policed by the customs to stop the importation of drugs and diamonds......he was also told that he was probably picked out for a search because he got off the plane and went straight to the toilet......we didn't know that customs officials are watching you from the moment you disembark. Well, you live and learn.

The pictures that the photographer took while we were on our visit appeared in the Rossedale Free Press along with the story of all our trips and visits.

I was presented with a set of very glossy prints to keep.......I suppose it made up for not having any Wedding pictures.

I was invited to many functions during my year of office.......Charity dances, Fetes.....Church Socials that kind of thing......I met lots of very interesting people, and I must say I thoroughly enjoyed being in the limelight.
The Board of David Whiteheads were pleased that their candidate was so prominently featured in the local press......it was very good public relations for them......and to show thie appreciation they bought me a lovely silver bracelet as a memento.

Spring turned into Summer.......we were still living with D***'s Mum....... she said that she didn't mind us being there.
She said she enjoyed our company.
June came along.... it was my 20th birthday.......we went out for a drink down town......it was a lovely summer evening and we decided to walk it back to Clayton.
I remember saying to D*** 'If you could have anything you wanted for your birthday.......what would it be?'
He didn't even take a moment to think about it. He said straight off ' A baby' I can't say I was surprised. He loved kids and had said that he looked forward to the day when we would have a baby.
I said 'Well, we'd better get trying then'
That was it.........the following month I knew we were going to be parents. I secretly wondered if I had done the right thing......but there was no going back now.......the die was cast.

When I told him of my suspicions he was ecstatic and wanted to go around telling everyone. I wanted to be a bit more circumspect.

I went off to see the doctor and he confirmed that I was pregnant and that my due date was the 15th of March......D***'s birthday was on the 17th of March...... so if all went well, he would be a Daddy for his birthday.

Our news made it even more important that we get a place of our own. We redoubled our efforts to find something.
We found a nice little place not far away from D***'s Mum.......we put a deposit on it and were making plans to decorate and refurbish the place when we were gazumped.

I was so disappointed.......I can't tell you just how upset I was.
I know that pregnancy makes you tearful and a bit crazy.....but I was definitely OTT.
I kept on trying to tell myself that we hadn't got that house because there was something better for us.

D*** came home from work one morning and said he had been told of a house in a quiet little street......it had belonged to an old couple.......it needed lots doing at it, but he felt it would be perfect for us. We went down to the estate agents and got the key to have a look at the house.

It was a lovely little house......although it did need some renovating. I was far more careful this time. I didn't want to raise my hopes for them to be dashed again.

We went through the process of getting the searches and surveys done. We applied for a mortgage and put down a deposit........this time we were lucky......the house was to be ours.
Yippeee!

Now all our spare time and money went into trying to get the house ready for us to move into.
My dear old Auntie was as good as her word.... she bought us our first three piece suite.
We were given lots of bits of furniture with which to make this place our home.
This house of ours had the ultimate luxury too.......a bathroom!
I would go down at the weekend and light a fire to heat the water just so that I could have a luxurious bath.

It was on just such a weekend that I got stuck in the bath.
D*** was downstairs hammering and banging........I was upstairs lounging in the lovely scented water. When it was time to get out I found that my advanced state of pregnancy had reduced my ability to haul myself out of the bath........I had let the water out and then tried my best to get up.......each time I tried, I slipped back into the deep old fashioned bath. I was getting cold and 'goosey'.
I banged on the pipes but D*** didn't hear me over his banging.
I was stuck there for ages before he came and rescued me.......I thought I would never live it down.

I hated being pregnant. I only ever fancied things that you couldn't eat.... things like firelights, mothballs, exhaust fumes, carbolic soap......and that horrible black disinfectant.

The only time I fancied anything remotely edible was one Saturday night I really fancied a steak pudding......guess what D*** wouldn't go and get me one.......I made a real fuss and cried like a two year old. I was certain that once I had this baby I would definitely not be having any more! to be continued
