I'll get there ... Eventually

Hello Accy Webbers - here's my first Blog attempt. Well, my second really. My first go disappeared into the ether as I was trying to upload some photos to go with it :( Hopefully I'll have more luck this time.

As some of you may know, I'm a semi-retired potter. After 10 years in business, I left my rented studio in August. Sales were down, and the rent kept going up. It just didn't make sense any longer. So I gave away my kiln, my slab roller and most of my equipment to another potter. Good karma, I know, but still I shed a tear or two - the end of an era.

I did keep my wheel, but dismantled it and stashed it in my garage. There's no chance of working from home, (too small, and hubby's pride and joy takes up the garage) so I resigned myself to joining the local Potter's Guild and becoming a hobby potter again.

Trouble was, they didn't welcome me with open arms like I thought they might. They're short on room, and were worried that I might make too many pots. As if! So I was rootless for a bit, until a kind soul offered to let me share her home studio. Turns out she lives in my town, had built a sunroom on the back of her house to house a studio for herself, then never used it. It had filled up with junk (sorry, things) and would need some organizing. But it looked great! She also had a potter's wheel and two kilns for me to use. I thought I had died and gone to heaven. Happily I moved in, and set about making a few pots here and there, just to pay for my clay, and recompense my friend for the use of her electricity etc. So far it's working out really well.

I was determined to refuse any orders, and just make a few pots as I felt like it. But then came the email from Langdon Hall - a fancy shmantcy hotel and spa about an hour's drive away. I'd done work for them before, mainly dishes for their breakfast buffet table, biggish quantities, and they only contact me every couple of years. As I hadn't heard from them in some time, I didn't bother to let them know I was out of business. Then, just three weeks after I divested myself of my equipment, in came an email requesting 40 cereal bowls and saucers as soon as I could make them. Not a huge order, but respectable. I dithered a bit, wanting to say yes (the $ would come in handy) but not sure if my new digs would work out. Heck, I hadn't even fired the kilns yet in my friend's garden shed. I did accept the order, and I'm happy to say all worked out well. A few prayers to the kiln gods (the ONLY gods I'll pray to) must have helped.

Showing an impressive bit of skill there Turtle good on you.
Have you ever suffered a power cut whilst firing?:dflam:

Thanks Stevie R. It didn't come easy - but it's been a great ride. Yes, power cuts have happened several times. It's not too great a problem as long as I could still refire and make the deadline (if there was one). Some glazes though just don't like to be refired. They can blister etc. And for crystalline glazes (something I was just starting to get into) a power cut can mean a ruined load.

Turtle....I noticed a while ago that you were doing a blog....i kept on looking for it and couldn't find it.
I was disappointed. While I am not as regular a blogger as I have been in the past, I miss having other folks blogs to read.
Blogging is a sociable thing...there needs to be more than one person doing it(otherwise, it is a bit like talking to yourself)...so welcome to the blogs.
I hope you will find time to give us a peep into your life(only what you want us to see).Lovely dishes...great blog....can I be like Oliver and ask for 'more please'?

Only time we played with clay was when they were building the M58 round the back of ours, my didn't we get stinging arses for coming in all grubby & smothered in clag! :D

Eeh, the joys of youth. :)

Thank you Margaret for your encouragement! I was inspired to start a blog after reading back through yours, and especially being transported back in time to your courting days. You really should think about publishing your work - you are a really good writer and story teller! Although I know how ridiculously hard it is to get published in this day and age. My hubbie's been trying for ages. Anyway, I almost gave up on my blog - after all, who would be interested in anything I had to say? But I did get around to it after getting stuck in 'draft' mode, and thinking people could see it, but they couldn't. I kept wondering why no one had viewed it, and it seemed to confirm my worst fears LOL! I didn't want to trouble Mick again, and so I bashed on through and here it is.
Best wishes to you, and I hope you have a lovely holiday in Wales. That reminds me of a childhood memory. Wait a minute - I can Blog about that!

That's funny Dave! I remember my Mum sitting me in the garden in Great Harwood while she was digging. I'd be 3 years old maybe. She handed me some clay, and showed me how to make bunny rabbits: three balls joined together for the head, body and tail. I like to think something stuck with me, and here I am playing in the dirt all these years later :)

Thank you for your lovely comments on my blog.
I am really glad you enjoyed it and that it made you start your own blog.
Again, I am going to do an Oliver......more please.

What may be mundane to you holds interest for us....it gives our perception of you a bit of substance.
