I'm Hibernating

The Prime Minister of Australia has now set a date for the next Federal Election. May 18th. That means for the next 37 days I will be going into political hibernation.

When I watch TV during that time I will have the remote at the ready and when any member of a political party shows their face I will press mute. Why listen to lies and false promises. I will not read any page of the newspaper that mentions politics or political figures. I do not want to know what any of them profess that they stand for – they should have proved this when in office.

I will be immune to fake smiles and pictures of the pollies kissing babies - shouldn’t there be a health warning against this practice? Maybe there should be a vaccination for babies to protect them from MP’s.

The literature full of bulldust that will be delivered in large quantities to my home will be consigned unopened to the rubbish bin where it belongs.

The Australian Government (those in power and those in opposition) over the past few years has been rocked with scandal, both sexual and political, alleged bribery and corruption, resignations – both voluntary and forced. You name it – it’s been there and done that. Prime Ministers have been changed with the wind, in and out as if using revolving doors. ‘Yes, Prime Minister’ eat your heart out.

Now that the election date has been set copious amounts of money will appear out of the air, projects (neglected for the past few years) will have promised finance, and suddenly my local MP will be my best friend. I might even get a visit from someone representing him/her – or be invited to a street corner meeting where I can air my grievances – not that airing them will do any good, it hasn’t before why should it now. Heaven forbid that he/she will actually come and knock on my door and have a cuppa with me.

Voting is compulsory here or else face a fine unless a person is exempted for one reason or another. I have only once deliberately spoilt my vote and I felt good for about 5 minutes, then I felt I had let my suffragette ‘sisters’ down and wished I had used my vote constructively. However, I am so disillusioned by the whole lot of them that I think that this time I will spoil my vote, probably write something rude on it, and hopefully will feel better for at least 10 minutes.

Oh, Dorothy....I could have written every word of that myself.
It is exactly my feeling on the subject.
Gone are the days when someone entered politics out of a feeling of civil duty....or to 'give something back'.

These days politics is a lucrative career....and it enables those in it to dabble in many other sidelines.
This ensures that come the time they feel the toe of a boot, they have plenty of irons in the fire.
They also feel that being a politician elevates them to the elite....which of course means that the rules we live by no longer apply to them....until they are caught out.
Then they are very 'sorry'....not about what they did, but about being dumb enough to get caught.

See, I told you we were separated at birth...I felt you nodding along to all of that.

I freely confess that life has made me a cynical old baggage(and there's me only 14).....you cannot see these things going on and NOT be affected.

In fact I think somewhere back in my blogs there is a very similar blog from me about finding a cave somewhere.

See, I told you I had something written about this.

As for spoiling the ballot paper....I feel no guilt about this.
I am sure that if our suffragette sisters could see the calibre of representatives we are having to select from....they would applaud us for doing it.

Every word you have written is so right, Margaret. There used to be people who went into politics to actually do good for the country and the people in it. Politicians who cared. Sadly this no longer seems to apply......

....and yes, I'm a cynical old baggage also.
