It makes a cloudy day sunny...or at least that is what it says in the song.
I like to think I have a good imagination........someone only has to tell me something and there it is in my head running like a video....I have no real control over it.
Which, in some instances, can be Ok.
In others though it makes me want go bleeeuuugh!
You know the kind of thing I mean.......? Bill Roach having bedded a thousand women. Can you believe it?
I don't see many of these women standing up to be counted......saying proudly 'I'm one in a thousand'....now Tony Blackburn is trumpeting his conquests too. Are they having some kind of life crisis(I can't say midlife as both of them can take their foot off the gas as they are well over the hill) and they need to have some kind of recognition for something - anything, anything at all that will put them back in the gaze of the public??
So there you go....that was one that tested my imagination and found it wanting.
Another one was the news that our Dear Prince Charles likes to 'make do and mend'.
Is that the same kind of make do and mend that my mother used to use when we got a hole in our shoe and she hadn't the money to buy us any more........the foot on a bit of old lino...drawn around, cut out and inserted into the holey shoe?
Or when the sole was worn and she patched it up with some old bit of rubber from something that lurked at the back of the pantry.
I can still see Ma sat with the cobblers last between her knees and a mouthfull of tin tacks trying to get a bit more life out of our footwear.
No, of course it isn't the same make do and mend......he was telling us that he likes nothing better than to take the old worn out curtains, and make them into cushion covers.
My imagination worked overtime on this one.......I could see him up a ladder taking down the heavy brocade......cutting out paper patterns.
Pinning them to the good bits, the unfaded bits, the bits with no snags or moth holes, taking his pinking shears and cutting out the pattern....then sat at an old treadle machine pedalling like mad to make up these cushion covers.
Can you see this same picture?
No, and neither could I...however hard I tried.
This eccentric old twerp has something like 130 staff on his payroll...so while he might like to tell us that he 'makes do and mends'....what really happens is that he gives the orders and someone else does the manual stuff.
I'm off now to mend some old sheets - a sides to the middle manoeuvre.......and to turn the collar on an old shirt.
