When I read it I didn't know whether to laugh or cry, its certainly in the "you couldn't make it up" league

Sad but true. Over the years from the late Nineties, there has been more & more softening of the approach to training recruits, they had a Yellow/Red card system in place so if the poor young squaddies felt they were being picked on by the nasty Drill Sergeant, they could card him and the nasty man would go away. Problem is, whoever you're up against ain't playing by the depot rules.

Soldiers need to be tough, children need to be disciplined, nurses need to be caring, teachers need to be knowledegable, Police Officers need to be on the streets, streets need to be gritted when it is icy and anyone who thinks failure entitles them to a bonus should be slapped.
