I was reading my last post....it sounded a bit petulant didn't it?
I am over it now...If I keep on telling myself that then I will believe it.(PBWY)
I was just musing about the party/buffet after a funeral....you know, that thing they call 'the wake'.
Why do they call it that? It is for certain that the deceased certainly isn't awake, nor is likely to be in the future.
I don't go to any of these 'wakes'.
I can understand that in days past, folk may have travelled long distances(by stage coach and I don't mean the bus company here) and they may have needed food and drink...but these days it strikes me as being unwarranted. In fact I feel very uncomfortable accepting such hospitality.
A funeral tea used to consist of Ham and tomatoes, a cup of strong tea for the ladies, a bottle of ale for the men, and a slice of fruitcake for afters....and no self respecting person would expect anything else.....people used to save up all their working lives to ensure that they had a good funeral...and that meant the appropriate funeral tea....often in the Co-op tea rooms.
Goodness, that must give my age away.
Ah well, when I depart this mortal coil, I hope there will be a minimum of fuss, no flowers and no wake...definitely, NO WAKE!
