Today is my neice's birthday, she is nine.

She was the first child born into our immediate family since my brother, her Dad, twenty nine years earlier.

She was born only a relatively short time after our Dad had died. I remember him bringing her home and he took her into the garden, he didn't know that we could see them from the kitchen window. He walked down the garden with his first born in his arms and then held her up to the sky. We all knew what he was doing, and we stood in the kitchen and cried our eyes out.

Not having children l am extremley close to my brother's children along with the many godchildren l've been lucky enough to aquire along the way. Seeing my neice and then my nephew when they were first born, and looking into their tiny eyes, was the nearest thing l will have to try to imagine how wonderful it must be to create a life.

Anyway, she's nine today. She's intelligent, funny, atristic but better at maths than either me or my brother were, and like all kids, unique.

We love each other to little bits, and l hope she comes to amuse me when l'm old and playing bingo in an old folks home somewhere.
