XBMC a media centre software was released for the xbox in June 2004 to run this software a modchip or software exploit/hack installed in/on the xbox to run, as it is not an authorized (a.k.a. "signed") piece of software.

XBMC is licensed under the GNU(general public license) and written to bs used with Microsoft XBOX Development Kit(more making games and signing software to run on xbox) and so was not legally available as an executable program. Users was encouraged to compile their own binaries from the public CVS repository using the XDK, rather than downloading a questionable illegally released exe. XBMC's full source code is however legal 'as is

At some point XBMC decided they wanted to change their name to KODI(not sure why perhaps to distance themselves from the xbox since the xbox versions legality was dubious) xbmc4xbox was born and maintained by one guy that really cares about keeping the xbox going, the internet is getting a bit heavy for it these days. Still use my xbox for a music jukebox.

I have told many people about how great xbmc is/was over the years. £20 would get you an xbox, they was easy to modify and you had a great media center for next to nothing... barely anyone knew about it, other than people i knew online.

In 2007 Team XBMC asked for contributions to coding/porting XBMC on linux systems. Sometime later they dumped the idea that XB meant xbox and XBMC became a PC thing. It spread to other systems. MAC, Hacked appletv boxes, RaspberryPI, Windows, Android etc.

So I felt the need for this blog post as its been discussed on here recently. I cannot stand the term "kodi box" or referring to kodi as "streaming device" streaming devices pale in comparison to KODI's capabilities. But streaming has never been my thing. Mostly the quality is naff for a start.

What I love about Kodi is how great of a personal media center it is. It can be pretty stunning visually, its personalized too, if you have the time you can really customise it for your own personal touch.

Android. Oh good ol' android. Such a fantastic operating system. Kodi was released for Android at some point and this is where the surge in popularity began, you started hearing people mention kodi in conversations but always with "watching football" or "latest movies" none of the mention of how beautiful a program it is.

Amazon. IMHO Amazon are the reason KODI is now so insanely popular. The firestick is very inexpensive for how good a device it is, it provides unscrupulous individuals the opportunity to install kodi and preload it with every illegal streaming application going(made easier by installation scripts people make online) and then sell them on for profit, giving KODI an extremely bad name.

So I thought id make a little video showing how kodi works. It was thrown together quickly on a windows installation so there isn't much to see...just a general look at the intended use of KODI.

Rob, it makes more sense now. It is a good aid for those who want to get one of these.
I could happily manage to use it, but the main TV watcher in our house would not stand a chance.
He has trouble sometimes accessing Sky TV programs...he has a pathological inability to read on screen instructions and then follow them(maybe that is because there is some mug who lives here who he can call on to sort things out for him)...he isn't thick, but he knows his limitations.
