Middle Aged........?

Today I was wondering.....when exactly do you become 'Middle Aged'.
I once read somewhere that middle age is always 15 years older than the age you are at present, which is quite comforting......except for me it would mean that I was going to live to be somewhere in the region of 140.

I remember my grandma died at the age of 57..........and she seemed absolutely ancient..........she wore a vest (all year round........summer ones were either cotton or silk, winter ones were wool).......a corset with suspenders.......well she had to keep up those lisle stockings. Lisle stockings.......is there anyone else out there who remembers these sexy things.......I think they only came in two colours......black and American tan.... though it probably wasn't called that. They did fade in the wash, and were almost indestructible.......if the went into a hole it could be darned.........and in Grandma's house always was.
In variably after washday there would be an inspection of the newly washed underwear.......anything in need of attention was consigned to the mending basket.

The mending was always tackled after tea.... usually while Grandad read the 'Pink' and Grandma listened to the radio.

It was fun to watch her do the mending if there was anything exciting on........she would sew faster and faster.
She absolutely loved the Dick Barton series.......gosh, that dates me.... though I have to say I remember it only VERY vaguely.

I often wonder what she would make of the middle aged women of today.......or the women that she would call middle aged.
To her, middle age would be mid thirties.......now to me, that is young.

I suppose in my grandma's eyes I would be an old lady......but I don't feel like one. Inside I still have all the attributes of an 18year old. So who is this person that stares back at me when I comb my hair....when did she take over my body....?

I also wonder how my daughters little boy will remember me in years to come.......will he see me as a wrinkled old biddy with no sense of fun.......I do hope not.

I have come to the conclusion that you don't get old by doing things....you get old by not keeping your mind open to all kinds of possibilities and experiences.

What do You think.....?

Oh Margaret, what terriffic memories. Like you I remember lisle stockings, as my mum wore them. My sisters wore liberty bodices and dresses that came below the knees, and underwear that was impenitrable.
I remember Dick Barton Special Agent, and his side kick Snowy. It was on radio at 5.50pm on a Friday, and I used to have to rush my paper round to get home to listen to it. Where have all the years gone? But middle aged......I still feel l and think like a young person. There are certain things the body will not respond to, but even that can't stop the thoughts. But carry on with your lovely blogs, I love reading them.... T.C.

your spot on with the middle age theory margaret,i also believe its not by doing things, but keeping an open mind.

Oh Marg, a joy as always.

YOU AN OLD BIDDY AND NO FUN? Errr..................... NOT IN A MILLION MIDDLE AGED YEARS!

OMG..... Your grandma would see me as middle aged, I see myself as a youngster. As long as your mind is active you will stay young. Remember that growing old is mandatory, growing up is optional.....
