Today is Mothering Sunday, the day when we honour our mother....do something special with her, or for her. I want to send greetings to mothers everywhere.
Mothers are vastly undervalued.....and I'm sure many of you realise this.
They do so much for us...they give up things for us so that we can have the best they have to give.
Mothering is not an easy task.....in fact I am going to stick my neck out here, and say it is the hardest job in the world.
Some mothers are mothers by design...planning their motherhood from the time the lines turn pink on the pregnancy test....some mothers become so by accident.....not really having thought about what such a vast change will have on their existence, but nevertheless they get on with it.
From the time that squirming pink bundle is put into your arms you are a prisoner to it(and I mean that in the best posssible way).
Your needs for food, sleep and time will now become second to those of this howling scrap.
There is no instruction booklet with this child......it would be an impossible task to produce something that covered all eventualities......all these tiny beings are unique....no two are exactly alike, though twins may come pretty close.
You guide this child through the dangers that life will throw at it...trying to make sure that it avoids the pitfalls that you found along your way......you do your best to make sure your child has the things that you might have longed for in your childhood......you may do the same things that your parents did for you.....or with hindsight, you may think that you can do them better.
All this to make sure that this little being grows up to be a happy, healthy and well rounded adult.
There's the rub. You can do all this and there are no guarantees.
Motherhood is a precarious profession......you can only hope that the good lessons will be learned.....and passed on to future generations.
That is why Mothers(even the not so good ones....and I count myself in that band) are important.
Today, make sure you tell your mother you love her...it doesn't need flowers or a card.....just hug her. She will know what you mean.
Today, My Mum is not very well......suffering with a very heavy cold...something she doesn't usually get. So get well soon mum, and for goodness sake stop being a martyr and take some paracetamol!
