My cousin Jim phoned the other night saying that he was in Blackpool and could he stop by for a brew. This is a total rarity as he never phones, he just turns up unexpectedly. In his youth it was always with a car load of mates in tow and they always ended up staying for the weekend. He phoned me because his girlfriend made him and I'm glad he did because I was going out, so I diverted them to Grego's for their brew. Jim and his girlfriend live in Grantham, he tends to do impulsive things like deciding to go out for the day not knowing where they'll end up. I'm really sorry to have missed him because I haven't seen him for about 18 months, but no doubt he will turn up on my doorstep unexpectedly sometime.
I call Jim my perfect cousin because he is... He's one of these good looking sporty types and now works as a PT instructor and outdoor pursuits trainer in the RAF. He has been in the RAF from being a teenager. He joined the Air Training Corps when he was a mere foetus, one of the lucky buggers who always knew what he was doing in life. During his time in the ATC, he was on an outdoor pursuits weekend in Wales. While the group were up some mountain the weather turned bad and a storm blew in. Nobody knew how to get back to civilisation and the visibility was non existent. Our Jim led the whole party to safety as he was the only one who could use a compass properly and read contours on a map. He received an award for his efforts and the ATC arranged for him to have flying lessons as a reward. He qualified as a pilot aged about 19. Not only is he an all round good egg, but he is a brilliant laugh socially. He is always the first to make a prat of himself on the dancefloor, will try anything once and I even have a photo of him somewhere carrying a handbag....
I remember going to see him when he was stationed in Cyprus and we had a fantastic week climbing Mt Olympus, Go-Karting, Windsurfing and hitting the bars in Limassol. So you see, he is my perfect cousin, and I hope to see him again real soon..
