I have just been reading a news item about a 94 year old Californian lady who has attained a degree.
Well done that woman.
She didn't have the opportunities to study when she was younger for a variety of reasons...then she married and had a family and that got in the way......well, she was interested in getting her children educated and hadn't time to think of her own ambitions.......but the ambition never left her......so she applied herself and she achieved her dream.
She stood up and made a speech at the graduation ceremony and all the young people in her class applauded her.
I am full of admiration for this lady. I have just seen, first hand the work that my daughter has put in to achieve her degree.......the hours doing research, reading obscure papers......the assignments, the lectures...the presentations.......and then to finish it off the dissertation.
Believe me it was a huge pile of work.
This story just goes to show that you don't get old by doing things.......your attitude to age is determined by how you see your own role in society, and of course ambition is a driving force.
When I was still working I thought that I might do and English Degree....it was something that I wanted to do.......having seen the work that Nicola has ploughed through put me off ...and I doubted my staying power....the other thing that also had a bearing was the cost.
It seems very extravagant to spend thousands of pounds on tuition fees for nothing more than vanity...after all I am not going to be putting such a course to use in my working life.......seeing as I am no longer in the market for work.
And yet......and yet, I can't rule it out.....because you are never too old.
