Do you think it will cut fraud or will it be used for big brother monitoring & targeting ???

I have my reservations about all this, as no doubt the cost for a passport will go up to pay for these centres, but also people getting personal information off u unnecessarily. Do i beleive it cuts fraud - not as much as the claims & in the wrong hands could be potentionally dangerous!! Also yet again the minority of the population will not be able to afford a passport, so really will this stop criminality of fraud. Also the information claimed to be able to check into all your history & all records against u - surely is a breach of civil privacy & personal stuff - that strangers in passport offices & who ever else can know ALL about u, also open to abuse this information!! How often i go for a pee should need to be up for anyone to know about gee is nowt private.

Im not convinced are u?

No, neither am I......for one thing we have had 'porous' borders for too long.
The government has absolutely no idea how many people have come into this country illegally...and what is more they are prepared to do nothing about it.
Being strict on the issuing of passports is a bit late if you ask me.....the phrase about stable doors and horses bolting springs to mind.

It’s late in coming, but better late than never. If we have nothing to hide we need not worry about big brother scenarios. I only hope that when illegal immigrants and fraudsters are found their deported immediately with none of this human rights bollocks.

I signed a petition against ID cards and recieved an 'email' from 'Tony Blair' about it, I'll post teh content tomorrow but TBH it was a we'll do whatever we damn well please and hide it under the terrorism and identity fraud banner.

I see a monster rising

Glad its not only me that sees this:) cos its the cop out way for the gov - we do the monkey work for them & their incompetance over immigration:(

I feel that if you have nothing to hide then you shouldn't be afraid of these more stringent checks;if it means we actually know who is coming and going in and out of our country so much the better. Fingerprints would be better still. I have nothing to hide and would happily do that if it went some way to ensuring my families safety.

Nowt to hide but how much imformation about u do they need to know??? & how safe is this information???

I've seen the government here misuse information, sometimes blatantly.

It's none of the government's business. And it should stay that way.

The information they are asking or could be held on record is like family, education records, medical records, no doubt NI & tax details even credit score/check details etc - now that is going too far just to record people going on hols, isnt it?

Exactly my concern also, so is it the UK is following the American way?

Not that I am aware of, but when I last renewed my passport (in 1998), it was mostly a matter of getting an up-to-date picture, filling out a form, and sending it in along with my old passport and the correct payment.

Okay, I got curious and looked it up. Here is what is required for a first-time passport:

"New Application for a U.S. Passport
To obtain a passport for the first time, you need to go in person to one of over 8,000 passport acceptance facilities located throughout the United States with two photographs of yourself, proof of U.S. citizenship, and a valid form of photo identification such as a driver’s license.

Acceptance facilities include many Federal, state and probate courts, post offices, some public libraries and a number of county and municipal offices."

BTW, renewing a passport is much simpler!

I have to submit far more documentation to prove who I am just to renew my driver's license!

Looks like the UK is not following the USA in this instance!

this country is getting really off kilter about security. a guilty conscience??? Greg, care to comment?
