New Technical things.

Heth has told us in her latest Blog about her Mum turning 50....still a spring chicken, because 50 is the new 40....or perhaps I am deluding myself here.
Heths Mum received a new Laptop for her birthday....a wonderful gift.

One which will open doors to so many things......well as long as she doesn't become scared of it........which I am sure she won't.

How can we be scared of something that we are in control of?

Well, it is easy, I guess. We think that in one touch of a button we are going to wipe everything out.......when in most cases the computer will ask us several times if we really want to do this.

I think that the fact the computer asks us so many times, we really begin to think it knows better than us.
It doesn't. And in most situations, if by some chance you do push the button and everything goes haywire, there is always a way to get it back......you may need to enlist the help of someone who understands what goes on in the workings of the machine.

all the things that I have learned about the computer have been self taught....by errorful learning....what that means, is that invariably I do it wrong....get all hot and bothered and then sort it out...hopefully not to make the same mistake again.....but, I am human!

Over the past few weeks I have been getting warnings that my browser was out of date.
I was prompted to get Internet Explorer 8.........except that I didn't really want Internet Explorer 8........I was quite comfortable with version 7(or it might even have been 6).

I did notice that my browser was running very slowly.....checked out the computer with my virus checker and it didn't pick anything up.......then on Sunday(my Back-up day) I noticed the red warning flag on my task bar........and some windows updates.
One of the updates deemed it self to be critical....so I set the machine to do the updates.
My security system kept asking for permisiion to allow access for Internet Explorer 9 to be downloaded.....and I kept refusing...so the update didn't seem to be going anywhere.
In the end, and against my better judgement, I gave the required permission.

The machine did what it had to do and then shut down.......when it switched back on again I had internet Explorer 9......my home page had been changed to something that I didn't much recognise, I was thrown into confusion.
My Taskbar at the top of the page with my favourite places on it had gone........just a red x in the left hand side.......oh bobbins.

I wanted my old browser back again....the one which allowed me to find everything.....the one I felt comfortable with.

I used to think I was adaptable, but I am beginning to think that perhaps I am not as adaptable as I would have myself believe.
I toyed with doing a System Restore......to take me back intime.
The logical, sensible me stopped me from doing this. I am going to have to get used to this new browser sooner or later......I might as well get used to it now.

So here I am a day later, and I am getting used to it. Not liking it yet, but it is early days
Heth......tell your Mum to persist, us silver surfers can master things if we put our minds to them!

Ahhh I will do Marg. I have already told her that you have wished her Happy Birthday and she passes on her thanks!

I did think she would be more scared than she is but she isnt at all, maybe because its her laptop.

I hope you get used to your new internet browser soon hun x

i sacked internet explorer a few years ago,fer similar reasons, plus someone that has more idea n me,(which aint hard) told me to try Firefox, which i did n have stayed wi it, more preferable to I.E. IMHO.:)

Nicola has firefox...and when my browser was running slow, I did consider converting to it....but you know me and my penchant for things I know and am comfortable with.......so I stuck with IE........it was my hand being forced that made the change...wasn't pleased about it.
Oh yes, I know why I didn't like it......it made my home page MSN........I hate MSN and converted my search engine to Bing.......I hate Bing too.

So now Ihave got my old homepage back and returned to Google as my search engine, things look......well, not quite normal, but nearly normal.

One day Cashy, I might pluck up the courage to ditch IE.

I'd go with Cashy on the choice of Firefox. Have been using it for several years without any major complaints & like you said Ma, if you stick with it you'll win out in the end trial & error has always been a pretty practical way of getting things squared. :)

Why is it if there are two ways to do something I always do it wrong first?

I will bear your recommendations in mind and if me and IE9 fall out then I might just grasp the nettle and give it a go.

Think I did the same as you margaret - ended up with IE 9 and all my favourites have disappeared. :(

But somehow, I managed to import all my favourites, I'm on google chrome now too and all my favourites are tiny icons across the top of my page and its just one click to get to facebook and one click to get to accyweb etc.

So I am quite liking my new browser....

Getting to grips with accyweb is taking me longer.... just discovered this blog section and wondering what its all about - bear with me, I'll become a dab hand soon :)

Thanks for your comment will (I hope you don't mind me shortening yout name).
I hope you do start a blog.......it will be good to have some new bloggers.
The blog section is for you to write about what you want......it can be fact or it can be fiction......you can tell us as much or as little as you choose about your life and what float your boat.
I am sure you will receive a great welcome if you take the plunge.
I don't do facebook...or twitter, so if I were to have lost those it would be no loss at all.
I have put the few sites I visit regularly on my tool bar....and I still have all my bookmarks.
It is just that IE9 is unfamiliar.......I like the familiar. It is my security blanket.

You could install Firefox, and keep IE, and see if you like it.

I much prefer Firefox now. Very easy to use, and safe.

Know what you mean about change. I had to update Firefox the other week, and a few things changed, but we soon get used to new things.

gary is correct, thats what ive done, kept I.E. but use firefox, occasionally yeh may get a site firefox dont support, i had one, so i used I.E. fer that un, though its now defunct so aint used fer couple of years.;) like yerself i don't use that many sites, so now all firefox.

Can i just point out to some members Internet explorer 9 will NOT work if your using windowx XP you have to have vista or windows 7 for it to work so do not download it or your going to have problems
thanks
