remove earplugs ,untick mute box,make sure slider on volume isnt down to the bottom on the volume icon near the time, is speaker in the green socket at the back of the computer,is power light on the speakers working they could be faulty,goto control panel aqnd look at sounds and audio devices and check its not muted or turned down there,also look there to check your soundcard is the one selected to use

if non of teh above works could you let us know if it is an intregrated onboard sound deivice or a sepratly bought pci soundcard
its very rare a soundcard goes faulty for no reason and is usualy somthing to do with a setting in windows somwhere
saying that i had just put the phone down on somone who had teh same problem as you just before i read your post lol
