Reading the thread about Epilepsy made me want to tell you what happened yesterday.
Wednesday 31st August 08:20am and my phone wakes me up, answer it still half asleep and my Mum is on the other end telling me she has just had a call from Grandma’s morning carer and that she is on her way up there as they cannot wake her up and the ambulance is taking her to hospital.
I jump out of bed and ring my auntie, told her what I had just been told and she said she would be at my house in 15mins to pick me up (t’other half had my car as he was working overtime) to go to the hospital.
So dashed around getting ready, just finished and car was outside, rushed out the house and over to Blackburn hospital.
When we got there my poor grandma was hooked up to the machines and covered in blood on her face with a tube down her throat to help her breath fast asleep.
She had an epileptic fit whilst asleep and had bitten her tongue and the inside of her mouth, paramedic’s had told my Mum if they had arrived 10mins after they did she would have not been with us as she had been choking on her own blood. When they had got there they had to act fast to clear her wind pipe and get her breathing properly again. Scary stuff.
So the doc came in and said that they would be sending her for a CT scan (due to her brain problems in the past) and for a chest x-ray. We were waiting for about and hour and Grandma kept opening her eyes but not speaking or recognising us, but her eyelids seemed so heavy so we just let her sleep.
She had her scan and x-ray and was moved out of A&E to the assessment ward, results came back and we were very relieved to hear that both her CT scan and X-Ray were clear.
That is the one thing that we all dread when my Grandma gets taken into hospital that she has another bleed on her brain. She went through so much last year with this problem and we all pray at the hospital that it doesn’t happen again as we know she isn’t strong enough for another major operation.
We were waiting with Grandma on the ward when the doc came to ask all relevant questions that needed answering. While the doc was doing this my Grandma woke up a little and looked at me. I tried to keep her calm by telling her everything is going to be ok and that she has just had a funny turn. I also tell her that it is about 13:30 and that she a sleepy buger today and that she should be out of bed (in a joking way) and I got a little chuckle out of her. Well I thought that’s good she is coming round a bit more now and seems to understand were she is and whats happening. I turned to my Mum to say something and turned back and my Grandma has her head rigid pointing to the ceiling and her arms started clenching and shaking……………………………………….she had begun having another epileptic fit.
I ran and got the doc’s and they came in and rolled her on her side more as my Mum had started to do it but was struggling as my Grandma was shaking that much.
For anyone who has never seen some-one have a fit I hope you never have to in your life.
It is a horrible experience, the person having a fit doesn’t feel a thing I have been told but watching it happen is a lot worse.
It does hit you hard, as you feel you are so helpless.
My grandma managed to bring herself out of the fit without an injection but the after shocks to her body carried on for an hour.
She were knackered so conked out.
While she was asleep the doc came back and informed us that one tablet that she takes to help her epilepsy has no trace in her blood. She takes this tablet three times a day but it seems her body just isn’t absorbing it. Not a good thing at all as she has had to go through all this but at least we are at the bottom of it now and something is being done about it.
They have now changed this and also upped her medication. She is still in hospital and she is very very tired with a sore mouth bless her.
Hopefully should be out soon and get back home but getting over this episode will take about a week for her.
I wish I could just wrap her up in my arms and make her better.
