Off the leash....

Margaret Pilkington

Beacon of light
Overlooker
Yesterday it was bright and sunny when I woke up.
Himself had things to do, people to see...sausages to prick...clinkers to rake.
Me?? I had taken some hayfever meds.....the ones that work but make you sleep the sleep of the dead.
So it was going up for 9am when I stirred my stumps.
Himself went out soon after I got up. he asked if he should take his keys......I told him 'Yes'....but I wasn't sure if I was going to venture out.
I wanted to....but thought of the consequneces of breathing in the air that is currently full of stuff that makes me sneeze, cough and makes my eyes run, was a bit daunting.

It took me a while to decide. I felt that it was a sin to be wasting such a lovely sunny day......so it was very late morning(there was only just over half an hour of the morning left on the clock) when I ventured out.

I got the bus to Preston with the intention of getting off at the stop nearest to Hoghton Tower.
I have been promising myself a visit to this old pile for quite some time now...but so far I haven't made it.

When we got to Riley Green the fields were full of cut hay.....some was being baled and even more was being cut.
Even though there was only one window open my eyes felt like they had pepper in them, burning and stinging...then running like a tap.

So I didn't get off and go to visit the house and the gardens( gardens = pollen = misery, sneezing and snotting).
I noted where the bus stop and and it is quite a hoof away from the drive...and the drive is a good hoof away from the house.

When I arrived at Preston bus station, there was a bus in for Lytham...and one for Southport. It was a toss up.....it came down heads....heads was for Southport......so that was the bus I caught.

I should have been in Southport for 1pm, but there had been an accident close to Tarleton and it was jams and single file traffic for quite a way.
It was going up for 1.30 by the time I was getting off the bus.
No matter. I was not in any rush to get back.
I could do my own thing.
I had my camera with me and wasn't going to be doing the shops.
Southport was busy. The sun brings people out in droves. Families were heading for the beach, alas no sea to be seen this week. Just a vast expanse of damp sand and wet mud in places.

This didn't seem to daunt the sunbathers. those having a picnic on the beach and the children queueing up for the donkey rides.

I remembered that Dianne(mobertol) had said she would love to see pics of the Arcade in Southport so after my jaunt along a very breezy pier I made for the Arcade.

Lord St was basking in the solstice sunshine.
People were at out enjoying alfresco lunches and the coffee shops seemed to be doing a roaring trade(the alehouses too).

There were tinlids in the Town Hall gardens running in and out of the fountains having a whale of a time. How is it children like water except when it is a bath or to clean their teeth?

I pottered and ambled taking snaps on my way and then decided that I should make my way home. This was another day when I had spent my time snapping and observing, but not having anything to eat......I did have a bottle of 7UP, but that was the extent of my refreshment. So by the time I arrived home (after 6pm) I was ravenous....all that fresh air really does give you an appetite.

1) Two kites...like two heads, are better than one(unless they are attached to your neck, that is)
2)All washed up - this chair looked forlorn, left stranded by the outgoing tide.
3) Mother and baby...waiting for the donkeys.
4) the guy with the urge to Fly...but only a kite!
5) I'd rather be sunabthing and eating ice cream, but they make me do this for a living.
6) donkey rides.
7) Children like water when it is linked to boats rather than baths.
8) when my ship comes in, I am going to spend the money HERE!
9) The town hall clock reminding me to get to the bus stop.
10) Lord Street taken from the top deck of the bus home.

I hope you enjoyed your day out with me.

Great to be able to just go off for the day like that Margaret and take pot luck where you end up. Looks like it was a happy choice of destination in the end. Lovely sunny photos both here and on the "Today" thread - nice way to have spent the longest day of the year. Thanks for thinking of me and taking the arcade pictures - very kind -wish I could have a wander around those shops (window shopping only) ... :)

Dianne every time we pass the Arcade I think of you...the last time we were in there the sky above was dark grey with thunder clouds(although there was blue sky towards inland - black cloud over the arcade) and it did not show off the place to the best advantage. Yesterday it was blue sky and acres of it...so took my chance...well, that and being by myself with no interrogations as to why I want a picture of that.

I agree with Diane - how wonderful to just take oneself off on a jaunt! To go wherever fancy takes you without having to consider someone else. Good for you, Margaret. You have a real talent for photographing your travels too, so it brings pleasure to we viewers :)

I am really happy that you enjoyed your jaunt with me Carolyn.
I do enjoy taking pictures, capturing the flavour of the day.
Come the winter the blog and the pics will remind me of my sunny day and will help me to re-live the pleasure.

I have also spent time today 'messing' with pictures.
They are the same pictures, but different.( I con myself that I have an artistic bent - well, I can think it even if it isn't particularly true).

I feel the same way about trying to preserve these precious summer days. I too save them up as fuel for the winter to come (shudder!)
I don't think you do yourself justice about your creativity, Margaret. You decide what scenes you want to photograph, and then elaborate on them with your software. The end result is your vision. What is more artistic than that? I especially like your photos of strangers that seem to tell a story. That telling of a story through your eyes is art, to me :)

Yes, you are right Carolyn. Before every shot I ask myself what is the subject and what is the story here.
My Dad was an amateur photographer who used to some freelance photography.....weddings functions and the like.
He told me that you should always know what the story was, just by looking at the picture.
I don't quite know what he would make of digital photography and the software that goes with it.
I ask myself if he would think it was cheating.....to be able to remove duff pictures, and edit so that the best bit of the shot is what you see.
I know the picture I want...how I want it to look, it is in my head.
I have told Davemac this.....and I think he 'gets' it.

So the apple hasn't fallen far from the tree. Your Dad would have been proud, I'm sure, even with all the new fangled gadgets available to us these days. Yes, I'm sure Davemac 'gets' it :)
