Commercial was a classic.. springs gaping out of the seats.. do you remember it the entrance was swinging doors?

When was that? In the early to mid 60s it seemed very smart to me.

Just before it was re-furbished in the 70's Willow.. I think it re-opened called the regency?

thought you didn't drink willow lol you must have had a few then, the market room was the pits,i know i never went anywhere very smart.;) the swinging doors were still there early 70s. with a normal door directly on the corner into the market room.

Regrettably circumstances robbed me of the opportunity of growing up and experiencing Accrington’s delights. I was often in the Cross Guns or the Thorn as a kid and then Red Lion at bedlam. But alas never as a drinker. My only claims to having old haunts were on coming over in the mid to late 70s to the Duke of Wellington on Abbey Street and the Bees knees with my father. Good memories never the less.

:engsmil: He was never in the Commercial, it only went downhill when they renamed it. Prior to that it catered for all tastes, the Market room for the shopper etc or the select 'afternoon tea etc'. Weddings funerals and christenings it was the place.

got to agree there, when they renamed it, was certainly smarter, but the character had gone forever. don't see many of those old faces nowadays, lot have croaked now but must still be some about.
;)

is the little un still going up manchester rd near firestaion . ?? remem going in there as well was really pokey and clicky

The Commercial used to be very smart - it was also residential. I've got a photograph aged about 10 bedizened in a very fluffy bridesmaid's dress, on the doorstep of the Commercial, and went to many a do there. Didn't drink much in town, really, there was a pub we used to go to near the Infirmary when I was nursing, but we couldn't afford to drink that often. Went more to pubs around Whalley and the Ribble Valley - and there was a very good club in Whalley in the 60s called the Ace of Spades. We thought it was the height of sophistication!

My first haunts were The Derby on Saturday and Monday before going up the "Con" Accy Stanely Supporters Club on Sunday night, there was a teriffic Jazz Clud there in the 60s. but I used to hang out in the Bay Horse in Ossy during the week. Then when I was 18 I moved to the Stop And Rest and the Heys Inn
