Open Wide......Aaaaargh!

Margaret Pilkington

There I was minding my own business. Bothering no-one, just sitting in the easy chair. Relaxin' and chilling out after tea.
The phone went.....as I was the nearest I stood up to answer it.....thinking to myself 'aaah, it will be Mutti asking me if I am packed yet'.
We are off down to Devon on Sunday.
I was quite surprised to hear a voice that I didn't recognise, ask to speak to Margaret Pilkington......'speaking' I said..... thinking that it would be one of these cold callers telling me that I had won a holiday or some such cobblers.
Now, I get quite irate with these folk.....and often give them short shrift (ok, I know they are only doing their job.....but they should expect irate answers when they disturb my evening)......I was just about to do this, when the lady identified herself as being from the Emergency Dental Service.
I almost dropped the phone in sheer panic. I have been waiting for nearly 18 months for a dental appointment.
In the early days I was on pins most of the time....but I must admit that as time has gone on I have got a bit relaxed, and sort of thought it was never going to get to my turn....though to be fair, Lettie did warn me.
She asked me a few questions......and I am not entirely sure that I gave coherent answers........like, she asked me about a daytime number 'Did I have a mobile on which I could be contacted' and I said 'No'.
Well, that isn't true, but I couldn't face being contacted while I was shopping......I might just disgrace myself. Peeing yourself in your own toilet is one thing....but peeing yourself in ASDA. Not nice is it?

Hubby is very blase about my fear of the dentist. He seems to think it is just a 'mind over matter' thing. I can't get it through to him how scared I am.....he makes very light of the subject.
He can't get to grips with my fear of letting some stranger poke around in my carious mouth, with sharp instruments....albeit, with the laudable aim of removing the several decayed stumps that lurk in there. Hello....this is the person who baulks at having her hair cut....and that is truly painless.
My daughter is more supportive, inasmuch as she has said that she will come with me.
Remember this IS the daughter who bought me an EMJOI epilator for a Christmas present and then proceeded to roll around the bedroom floor, peeing herself laughing as I tried to remove my under-arm fur.
It makes me ask if she is coming with me A) to ensure that I do not escape.............
OR B) to get her own back for the home haircuts and home made frocks she had to endure as a child.

They have said they will be calling me for an appointment in a few weeks.
I think I spotted some Valium in hubbys' medication drawer.....I'm going to be needing this methinks, even for the assessment visit.
My daughter might just get a shock...if I take the Valium she might have to carry me!
Hubby tells me it doesn't hurt.......well, no he can just put his teeth on the table and they can be sorted out....so no, he isn't going to feel anything.
My son-in-law tells me it doesn't hurt....he doesn't know what a wuss and a coward I am.
My daughter tells me that if I can file down the rough edges of a broken tooth with a diamond nail file, then I am not a wuss........ or soft!
God help me!

And those of you out there who are laughing at my predicament.....shame on you!

Ooooh, I remember my first out of the blue phone call. By my estimation following that call...........your first appointment will be in 3-4 weeks. They're very nice Margaret but that does not change an innate fear of dentists. I am steeling myself for my follow-up visit on Wednesday..
