My friends John and Don called me tonight. They have invited me to the witnessing of their relationship on Febuary the eleventh, the day after their seventeenth anniversary.
It isn't a pretend wedding, just the state acknowledging their commitment and love for each other. It will give them the same legal rights as hetrosexual couples, ie: tax, pension rights, and will make themselves each others next of kin. I once knew people who had been a devoted couple for thirty years, but when one of them was dieing, the others family kept his partner away from his bedside, and they had the law on their side. This will put a stop to all that silliness.
Like John said to me tonight, we don't have the luxury of children or the state, until recently, to cement our relationships, therefore friends become very important to us in our 'pretend' families.
I'm really happy for them, and can't wait to go back up to Scotland again to share their special day.
