sad loss today of one of the best tenors
will be sadly missed by serious music lovers every where

made some great music , lots of purists didn't appreciate his style , but he ( and the three tenors) brought some good music to the masses RIP.

A sad loss. He was a great entertainer who obviously loved music and loved entertaining people. He had a beautiful voice. People criticised him for taking opera to the people but a lot more people came to appreciate the music thanks to him. I loved the way he would sing modern songs as well as operatic stuff and sing duets with such a wide assortment of people.

Really sad, my Dad is a big fan of his, made me listen to him when I was about 11 and I thought " what a blummen racket " but when I was a little older and had a more mature ear I appreciated his talent.
RIP the King of the High C's.

This Is The Second Death In 2 Days ,they Say Things Like This Come In Threes,, Who Will Be Next?
R.i.p. Pavarotti And Jane Tomlinson..

Absolutely awesome voice.Just watched the tribute on the Beeb. The great man will be sadly missed. R.I.P.

Until the 1990 world cup how many people had heard of Nessum Dorma and Pavarotti? The 3 Tenors brought Opera to the people and Pavarotti was instrumental in that. He will be missed.

It's actually "Nessun Dorma" (trans. None shall sleep.). Pedantic of me, I know, I am chastising myself as I type.

I was watching the report of his funeral on the news this evening; can anyone enlighten me as to why Italians feel the need to applaud at funerals? They did this at the funeral of the late Pope, too.

It's a good job it wasn't a cremation.

They would have kept opening and closing the drapes, as he took his last curtain call.

Diana, Princess of Wales, was the first funeral I remember people applauding at. People were doing it in Hyde Park, even before her brother's eulogy.

Nessum Dorma from Puchinni's opera Turandot made the great man great, you shall sleep now my friend.

Rip Pavarotti, think the clapping is in celebration of the life rather than mourning the death.

Re: Italians applauding at funerals. Tha Italians are much more exhuberant than the Brits in general and show their appreciation of life very easily even in what we consider to be solemn moments - i don't find it out of place anymore.
I do get worried about the way they applaud the pilot when an Alitalia plane lands though - perhaps they don't always make it....!
Pavarotti was a great ambassador for their country and the Italians truly loved his "big" persona - as well as his unique talent he had a very common touch -loved a game of cards with his friends and his food and wine - in this he was a typical Italian and his countrymen were very proud of him.
