I went to my pre- op appointment mid January. It was all very straightforward. My blood tests were repeated, as the lot that I had had done at New Year were a bit abnormal. I had a load of paperwork filled in and a few questions answered.
I was horrified to find that I would need about 6 weeks off... Six weeks!!!!! what the hell am I going to do with myself for all that time?? The nurse said that it was a common misconception with keyhole surgery that you recover in a couple of weeks. She said that the outside scarring won't be as bad, but the inside is, and seeing as they will be removing an organ, this is still major abdominal surgery...... Yikes!!!
I had to break the news to work that I would be unavailable for 6 weeks, no lifting, pushing and pulling eg hoovering, driving etc. I was going to be bored out of my wits.
I started to prepare for a hospital stay, pre-op clinic had said that I may need an overnight stay, again, this was not what I wanted to hear, I was hoping to be in and out the same day. I packed a small bag with some clean pyjamas and toiletries, put a book in there for good measure and made sure I had a couple of quid for newspapers etc. I was told that the surgery is generally done about a month after pre-op and that I would get a letter.... I was starting to get really nervous now.
What if I didn't wake up, or woke up too soon??
Would the post-op pain be dreadful?
Would I be able to manage the pain?
Would I wake up gagging on an ET tube or even worse.....vomiting??
As you can see, I was calm, relaxed and hopeful about the whole thing..
