We normally have a bus ride to Manchester or Bury Market on a Saturday....give the bus pass some usage.
When I got out of bed and looked out of the window, it was pisitively possing it down.......so I got back in bed and had another hour. I felt certain that himself would not want to be traipsing round either Manchester, or Bury in the pouring rain.
In that respect he is much like the dog. Thinks a bit of rain will melt him. I keep telling him he isn't made of sugar or salt.
So I had the extra hour in dreamsville.
A leisurely breakfast and a read of the papers, then a shower. No point in rushing, we weren't going anywhere....I thought.
By the time I was showered and had dried my hair the day had brightened a little, the rain had stopped, the slates were drying off a bit.
Himself went and did his ablutions and came downstairs dressed for the off.......suggested we go to Blackburn for a change!
I can't say I was thrilled, but he said it would give me a chance to go and have a look at the 'New' market.
I used to go to Blackburn every week, but now I don't go for months on end.
The last time I went was round about Easter........it was a disappointing trip. Nothing out of the ordinary.
Anyway, I stirred my stumps and got ready.
By the time we were going out for the bus, a steady drizzle had started to fall. The kind of rain that envelops you and wets you through...but ah, it was warm rain.
The bus deposited us in Ainsworth St.....we passed the old Market site, and doesn't it look sad....a major lump of land in the centre of the town closed off.....and yet the new building that is the Mall and the market looking decidedly unfinished.
We had an uninspiring walk around the town centre......a peek in M&S(improved....allegedly,but not improved)......a trail through the Mall and down the escalator to the new market.
I had read that the new market was lovely, and I don't quite know what I was expecting.
It doesn't feel like a market. It has no atmosphere......no buzz......and it was quite dark.
I was disappointed. It did not live up to my expectations(though I don't know quite what they were). It just feels like a poorer extension of the Mall...and the empty stalls make it feel like it isn't finished.
I won't be going there again anytime soon.
I know the old market site was past its sell by date, and needed something doing with it.....but I fear this is not quite the right thing.
Progress eh? doesn't always mean things are changed for the better.

Better off in the Abbingdon street market, far more interesting & definitely the better option.
