The equipment to do the work on the two downstairs rooms was hired for the weekend.
Daughter and hubby had worked their socks off on the Saturday....and they had done a magnificent job....but there was still the other room to do.
It wasn't easy sanding the floorboards......furniture had to be moved from one room to the other.......and then it had to be sheeted up to protect against the dust.....proud nails had to be detected and knocked into the wood so that they didn't rip the belt off the machine......all hard physical graft.......and if they wanted to finish the work, it meant more of the same on the Sunday.
I was up and ready by just about 9am......I mentioned to hubby that I was going across for the potlids.
'WHAT, are we having them again?'
Well surely it stood to reason that if there was another day of slog to be done, then we had to be having the potlids......he didn't seem a bit impressed......but I don't know why he had the 'monk on' as he does relatively little to keep them amused or occupied.
The morning was grey and damp, so that meant we had to find indoor activities to keep the two of them amused.
Leap Pads were brought out and they both played(I won't say quietly) happily for a good while.
Tiddler wanted to play out. I told him if it dried up then we would play outside.....he was happy with that promise and he set about playing on my Nintendo(we had forgotten to pick his own Nintendo up from the house).
They had lunch and by this time the day was looking up......even a bit of blue sky.
Tiddler went and got his bike out.
Miss Bossy Drawers was sulky and petulant........she wanted to play on the bike.....not the baby bike! The big bike.
I told her that she might get a turn, but she would have to be patient.
'What's patient?' she asked.
I told her that patience was waiting your turn.
'I think it should be my turn NOW!' was her response.
She was leaning against the wall with her arms folded and her bottom lip stuck out so far that it was in danger of being used as a landing pad for the emergency helicopter!
I found her a megaphone to play with.
Well, when tiddler saw this he immediately wanted to swap....she could have his bike...if he could have the megaphone.
So all afternoon they played out in the yard.......occasionally swapping bike for megaphone and vice versa.
I did the veggies for the tea and watched them through the kitchen window.......where was hubby......well, he was in a recumbent posture on the sofa, watching the football.
Daughter rang to let us know the progress of the work....it would be just after five before they finished and she asked if we could keep the tinlids until then.......she told me not to give them tea, as she had something cooking for them.
I dished our tea up.....Miss Bossy Drawers hovered near her Grandad and begged hot roast beef from him.....each time he gave her a chunk she munched on it and went back for more......she had roast potatoes too.......and carrots, but she declined the cabbage.
I felt sure that she would never eat her tea at home, and that I would be in trouble with her Mum for giving her stuff that spoiled her appetite.
Half past five, the phone rang to tell us we could take the potlids back home.
They really didn't want to go. Tiddler pleaded to be allowed a 'sleepover'...but it was school the following day so I had to tell him 'NO'.
Over at their house I admitted having fed Bossy...and it was no drama......the daughter and hubby were covered in a fine layer of wood dust......and looked absolutely cream crackered, but at least they had got the work done........and it looked lovely.
I handed my charges over and skipped off back over the road.
The varnishing still needs to be done, but they have to wait a few days for all the dust to settle....and the varnish is fast drying stuff, so can be done in the evening when the tinlids have gone to bed.
