Somewhere on a stone tablet it is decreed, the tradition that the woman of the house shall work like a drone from rising until going to bed on the Eve before Christmas. It was ever thus. This is despite the fact that she has trudged around the shops looking for suitable gifts for her family, his family, friends and relatives...... she has also in her head, a list of cards to send......foods to buy....cooking to be done.....booze to be bought. Nothing is left to chance. She tells herself that there are 'only the finishing touches' to be put to her arrangements....and she expects that at some point on Christmas Eve she will get to sit down with a glass of something cold out of a green bottle and perhaps a few nuts....she hopes that she will be able to put her feet up and watch a girly film.......and yet in her heart she knows that she will be slaving in the kitchen.....or still wrapping presents when the kids have gone to bed. The man in her life..... the hero.....he went out for a 'quick half' at 1pm and has not been seen since. Never mind she will ensure that the kids get up extra early......little Simon (bless him) has a noisy gun coming from Santa.......she will make sure he gets into the marital bed and lets rip with it right beside his lughole. What's more she will hide the paracetamol and the aspirin......and the alka-seltzer will have left home too. She will lovingly cook her beloved a full fried English breakfast......beans,eggs, fried bread, bacon, mushrooms the full monty....well, it is the least you can do on Christmas morning.....and woe betide him if he doesn't eat every scorrick and wipe the plate clean with a bit of bread.
What is it with Men.....? Can't they read.....? I have had all the Christmas presents wrapped, labelled and ribboned for nearly two weeks now. Some friends of ours came to drop off their presents...and I ask hubby to give them their bag of presents......I am up to my eyeballs in flour and pastry in the kitchen.....hubby comes in and says 'which bag is it?' I tell him that I have this wonderful new strategy for ensuring that everyone gets the right gifts......name labels!........'Where are they' he shouts.......erm, well they would be on the gift bags wouldn't they?.......Grrrrrr.
After saying that the day has gone relatively smoothly. The sausage savouries are cooked.....the cheesecake is made......the trifle only needs the whipped cream and decoration adding to it......and it has never been known in the history of man......I managed to have a lovely walk in the sunshine this afternoon. Christmas - BRING IT ON.....!
To all of you who read my ramblings.....have a wonderful Christmas day.
