Spectrum

Restless

Some 30 years ago I was 7 years old and for xmas I received my first computer - a Sinclair ZX Spectrum 48+ it wasn't the rubber keys model(though a friend owned that one) that I have now. We would try and try again to load a game with the good old tandy tape deck. Oh That high pitch whining you got when the data was loading, the constant R:Tape loading error that meant you had to rewind and try again for the 20th time...finally after an hour the game loaded....

Ive been going back to spectrum for a while, through emulators. Last one was on the Xbox, with a modified usbcable and a butchered joypad you can get a USB keyboard to work. But it still didn't cut it.

Gumtree- I saw a spectrum for sale. It was cheap. I had to buy it, Cosmetically It looked great, it worked, however it was not so great on the inside. The power slot was busted and the membrane disintegrated upon opening. So £40 I posted it to Mutant Caterpillar (these guys are awesome). Had a new membrane placed, a fixed power socket and the RF output modification so the spectrum will now output to composite. With a video converter I have my 48k spectrum hooked up to my 144hz 27" gaming monitor. Now that is overkill! :)

The thing sticking out the back of the spectrum is the Zaxon DivMMC. If you owned the spectrum 48k you will know that you required an interface to plug in a joystick. Using this beautiful work of art(eye of beholder) not only can you use it as a kempston interface. You can load games instantly from a microSD card

You can see that in action http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T7BDkBFVG0g

A few weeks after buying the 48k I spotted on ebay a 128+2a The hated model. Well that was hated(still is) by Sinclair enthusiasts that didn't like what Amstrad was doing with the product, when they bought out Sinclair. It had a built in tape deck. It was going cheap at £40. It came with a few games, two joysticks and a light gun. I had to order a special cable to get it to work through scart, and it works like a dream through this Phillips FlatTV that I very luckily found on the flea market for £15(Turned out to be a really good buy as I recently found out how to get the tuning menu(had no remote) up. I have this old bat and ball pong console that uses RF and its extremely annoying to tune in)

Well the Spectrum+2 My parents bought me this from Dixons, my 48+ was recently deceased and I was overjoyed with this new model with the tape deck that worked every time(for a while that is) It came with a light gun(that never seemed to work) and a James bond game(that I could never play) View to a kill it mightve been. Not sure.

Well the +2a that I bought was in fantastic condition. The tape deck works fine!

Well anyway here it is :D

and yes the wallpaper.I know... I KNOW :D

Interesting points Rob, now if only I could understand what you meant by half the things you've talked about!

Don't mind me I'm just a technopygmy, I'm better at stuff you can refine & repair with gert big hammer. :D

I spent many boring hours keying programs from magazines for my Spectrum. Did you download them to a tape, I can't remember?
Anyway they never worked, I spent many more boring hours trying to find the'/,/./ or whatever I'd missed, always gave up in the end.

Ernie used to program them in too. I think there was a way to record them onto tape too. I never did that myself. :D
