Superstitions.

Thinking about the strange rituals we have related to religion, I got me a thinking and scrathin' my head about about superstitions.

I'm an atheist.

I also think superstitions are a load of mumbo-jumbo.

Strangely though I still knock on wood, or tap my head if I ain't got no wood, when I don't want to jinx myself.

Looks like I'm a total hypocrite, or is the human nature so fragile that we need these scientifically unproven rituals in our lives to survive?

Where did they originate from?

If you do them, will they perhaps turn into one of those phobias were you have to turn round six times and leave the house backwards, because if you don't you think diaster is waiting round the corner?

What little superstitions do you always do?

I know it's illogical but I hate to see a lone magpie and always look for another one.

I do that too.

Why?

Its fear.

Like you say its illogical...but why risk bad luck?

I'll probably be one of those atheists who have a grand conversion in old age, and demand gold, incense, Gregorian chants and a priest in full regalia...just in case.:D

Salute a lone magpie. Dont eat meat on Good Friday. Dont walk under ladders.

Dont walk under ladders - because you never know what might drop!

Dont eat meat on Good Friday - mum said it was because it would be like eating Jesus - my idea was that gave mum a break from cooking - dad always cooked the fish because he was better at it than mum!

Salute a lone magpie - my sister said it was bad luck if you didnt.

On sighting the said lone Magpie Willow you must smile at it and say these words in a firm, but respectful voice. “too the wings my friend, you’ll bring me sorrows this day”

Oooh can I just do a little thread wander? Your grand conversion with gold, incense and Gregorian chants reminded me of Mimi when she was little talking about the "Frankie stinks" at Christmas! :D

I don't want to go giving it any ideas! My Gran used to say you had to ask after his wife and hope she was well! Supposing it's a female Magpie???

I saw a lone magpie on my way up to rawtenstall today, bad luck, I actually had better luck than i thought, I asked someone to meet me n they said no, which was expected, but they did agree to meet up in the next couple of weeks which is fantastic. I had something else nice happen too, then on the way back i saw another one. so do singles make a pair. singles and pairs were the theme through out the day.

ah yes when you spill the salt, you throw some ofver your shoulder so the next person along will go slip, arse over tit and and you can blame them for the mess.

whos the tat member?

Don't be like that hatter, he's really a nice chap and quite harmless. I think that word seems a little harsh, admittedly he's a pain in the arse but to call him a tat, Oh sorry, I thought you said something else :D :D :D

lol i meant he's the tit whos the tat.
He knows I think an awfull lot to him really and have a lot of respect for him, this place wouldnt be anywhere near as good with him.

I think the salt thing dates or more correctly originate out of the bible storey of the Pillars of Salt. The don’t look back thingy. Anyway if you spill salt and you don’t homage the fact by throwing over your shoulder (i.e. not looking back) you’ll get bad luck.

Here's the tit.

I wouldn't be so rude as to point out the tat.;)
