Surgery deferred

My other half has been in Blackpool Vic for the last two weeks.
This time two weeks ago I would not have given sixpence for his chances of survival.
It really looked that bleak.
Thankfully right now he is stable, out of CCU and off the monitor.
He needs triple by-pass surgery…open heart surgery….and this is scary, but he cannot come home until it has been done.
In the meantime he is on a veritable dolly mixture selection of drugs to keep him stable.
Early in the week it was mooted that surgery would be done on Friday…yesterday.
He has bloods done and was being geared up for this op.
I went over Thursday afternoon…thinking that this would be the last time I would see him until he came out of ITU after his op.
When I visited he said he felt hot and sweaty….I told the nurse….his temperature was checked and it was up….they repeated his infection markers just to be sure.
These came back late Thursday evening showing they were raised.
The consultant was notified and the surgery was deferred for clinical reasons.
There is no sense into going into a big op like that with an existing infection present.
The consultant saw him yesterday and said that if he had not developed a urinary infection, his surgery would still have been postponed because a very ill patient had been admitted and they needed urgent surgery so they had taken the slot that was available due to my other half getting an infection.
Fate decided Friday was not going to be the day.

This does mean that he will be staying over there a bit longer….and there is no guarantee that the surgery will not be cancelled again if something urgent comes in.
We both know and accept that this is part of how it has to be…someone else has a surviving father, brother, mother, sister…someone who is close to their heart as a result of this cancelled op.
We can live with that.
