THE OP !!!

Mick

Resting in Peace
Overlooker
Well the day has come at last .
I am sat here with Butterflies Anne and my overnight bag waiting for the ambulance to take us to BVH it is 7am
we have to be there for 10am but the ambulance is early he lands at 8am so off we go got to BVH at 8-45am.
They told me i would be in the new cardiac unit on ward 36 and its on the first floor .
A nurse took us up to the ward and i was given bay 14 or thats what she said its a nice new unit only opened that weekend at a cost of 35 million pounds.
It is that new halve the stuff needed is not there yet no chair for anne to sit on ect the ward is made up of separate bays all with there own bathroom very nice .
We sat on the bed and a male nurse came in and took my details then a doc came in and took blood did an ecg and blood pressure pulse ect then he saidi need you to take some tabletes as this is a drug you will be on for a year you will be taking 2 a day but we need to get the drug into your system and gave me 15 of them to take .
We were told i would be going to theater later on in the afternoon and just to wait .
The nurse came in with 2 chairs for us and she gave me a nice new gown and said there is no point putting it on yet .
We waited with it being a new unit they had not had time to put much in yet so no tv and no payphones yet all there was was a clock on the wall that was a hour slow so we just sat there reading mags ect they came round with the tea trolly you can have anything can you I HATE NIL BY MOUTH .
It got to 12-30 pm and anne decided to go and phone mummiboo(daughter) and have a fag hehe she had been gone about 45 mins and i was just thinking she has got lost again when the nurse came in and said get your gown on they are comming for you there has been a cancalation in theater and i was next, them Butterflies turned to dive bombers.
I was just finishing getting my gown on when Anne appeard i got lost she said i thought you had been moved they said you were in bay 14 but this is bay 15 even the staff were getting used to the new unit .
within 2 mins of me getting my gown on the porters were waiting to take me to theater so off we go.
Now all the theater equipment had been moved down from the old area to the new theaters in the cardiac unit but on the friday all the computers had crashed in the new unit so all the theater equipment had to go back to the old part of the hospital over the weekend this is over the other side of the hospital so its a fair ride over to the old theaters on the sunday and monday morning they were moving everything back again as the computers were working again but there was none setup yet so only theater3 was running.
when we got to the recovery room it was like a cattle market there is only room for 4 in the room but there was 6 in .
They did another ECG and the surgeon came in" have we met before he said with a grin yes i said quite a few times" .
So they took me into theater3 just slide over onto the table please said the nurse just as i got on the table the nurse said be carfull its very narrow as i nearly fell off the otherside the operating table was a quarter the width of a bed just enough room to lie on your back but no room to move .
The nurse started putting a paper sheet over me and the doc got my wrist ready he injected it with a local anasthetic and off they went i could not see the monitors in this theater as there was only 3 of them not like thearer 2 where there is 6 and with the x-ray camera over my chest all i could watch was the surgeon playing with my wrist.
Once they had everything pluged into my arterie they first injected HEPARIN to stop the blood clotting the next thing that went in was the NITRATES this is the dye and you feel a very funny sencation as it goes though the body but it hurts as it goes in anyway they put the first of 3 stents in and the balloon to open it up this is where the chest pain starts as they blow the balloon up it cuts blood to the heart and you end up with chest pain like an very servere angina attack .
They did the same with the other 2 stents giving me more drugs ect by this time i was feeling very sore and very fedup and i turned to the doc and said "have you nearly finished " with a smile he said yes but they carried on for what seamed ages.
when they had finished the nurse came over to the table and took all the monitoring tabs off and started to move the sheets at this point as she moved the sheets a load of swabs that had been used and were full of blood went splat on the floor there was blood allover the place she turned to the other nurse and said its not my day, i just looked i had not realised i had lost so much blood .
They put a cuff on my wrist and blow it up with air to stop the blood getting out of the wound this was great no pain not like the thing they put in the groin.
They got me back on the bed and wheeled me into recovery i felt like i had been kicked in the chest by a horse there was so much pain they did another ECG to make sure the pain was not coming from the heart and just a result of the op then i was taken back to the ward.
Anne was starting to panic the op should only take about 1 1/2 hour but i had been in theater for 2 1/2 hours i got my first hot drink of the day but was still having problems with chest pain they gave me some pain killers and it eased off a bit.
Just then mummiboo and directdj (son & daughter) came in they had come to take Anne home so they stopped a few hours it was nice of them and i really needed to see them .
while they were there the nurse decided to do another ecg and gen checks the nurse put the new bloodpressure m/c on automatic so it did it every 30 mins but its a new type and nobody was sure how to set it anyway it did not go off so when she came again she took the cuff off but forgot to switch the m/c off and it started bleeping every 10 seconds this went on for an hour and was driving me nuts when she came to it she could not switch it off so just pulled the plug out the mains hehe.
When they had gone i settled down with my mp3 and tryed to get some sleep but it was very hard with chest pain and the heat and it did not help being wrapped in a quilt .
so i got 2 hours here and there at 5 in the morning i was just dosing and the nurse decided it was time to check on the wrist strap and to let some air out yawn i droped off again but next time i looked it was 7am and they were comming round with the breakfasts.
They said i could go home after the doc had been and i had had another ECG as luck would have it the doc was on the ward so he came round at 8-30am and said everything had gone ok they had put 3 large stents in costing £6000 and they were just waiting for the ECG
they orderd my transport i thought it would be a car but nope they checked the ECG and said the pain was not from the heart just the op and that was expected so i could go .
20 mins later 2 ambulance men turned up and wheeled me to a hi speed cardiac transport ambulance the ones used to transport between hospitals we left the hospital at 11-50am and pulled up outside our house at 12-20pm
HOME AT LAST
CAN I JUST SAY A BIG THANKYOU TO ALL THE STAFF AT THE CARDIAC UNIT WARD 36 AT BVH FOR ALL THERE HELP AND KINDNESS .

Welcome home Mick. Glad it all went well. As horrendous as it sounds it has to be better than a bypass.

Glad to hear that you have had the operation.......you were very brave, and they didn't even give you a jelly baby! On the serious side, take it easy Mick and get well soon.

I feel quite ashamed to be so worried about a simple visit to the dentist after reading what you went through.:0

Busman told me while we were away that you'd had the op and were home again. I couldn't believe it was so quick. Good to hear it went ahead as planned and that everything went OK. It sounds like it was quite an ordeal at the time but worth it in the end.
