Yes, another bee in my bonnet.
I was reading in the Lancashire Telegraph how a non Muslim teacher is doing the whole Ramadan fast.
She is doing this in solidarity with her students....or that is the reason given in the piece....written, by the way, by someone with an Asian name who is very likely a follower of Islam.
Why is this newsworthy?
And is it ethical?
How fatuous and patronising.
My view on this is that this is a blatant episode of virtue signalling.
If this teacher just wanted to show solidarity with her students the she should have done it quietly....with no trumpeting 'look at me' fanfares.
Is she trying to suggest that her actions will foster
Community cohesion....that is the angle that seems to be portrayed.
Myself, I think that her action is not only condescending and patronising....and if I were a Muslim I would be highly offended that someone not of the faith, had hijacked one of the pillars of my faith for cynical reasons.
Students do not have to observe the Ramadan fast during exams....they can postpone their devotions until a later time. That they choose to fast is their business....and their choice to prove their devotion to their faith.
This woman is not proving that she has faith or even that she understands the faith...in fact I think it is quite the reverse.
She is seeking approval, seeking plaudits.and that is not what the fast is about.
I would also ask, how fit is this young woman to teach children when she has fasted for 18 hours....and also if she has followed the rules and risen in the dark hours to eat, then she is not only impaired by hunger, but by sleep deprivation too.
All to 'virtue signal '.Fake, fake fake!
Ok...rant over!
Oh yes....and before you tell me that in the scheme of things...it really doesn't matter.....I KNOW.
