Yes, this was one of the beatles songs of my era...as was 'When I'm Sixty Four'.....OK....I haven't made sixty four yet (though some days I do feel like I have)......and I have got my ticket to ride.....Bus pass that is.
Hubby has had his for quite a while.....he got his as a result of having had a stroke and being classed as disabled...though he is very well...thank you very much.
He didn't ever use his bus pass....it just languished in his wallet in pristine condition.
Then last year I got my bus pass.
I took several solo jaunts on the buses and thoroughly enjoyed myself. I would ask hubby to come along with me.....no parking to think about, no driving...... a pleasant day out and lunch too.
A few weeks ago, on a sunny Saturday morning, he said he didn't want to go out and suggested that I took off on one of these bus jaunts.
So rather than stay in the house and do stuff that needed doing, but would wait until another day, I got myself ready....and as usual threw out an invitation for him to join me.....to my surprise he did.
We only went to Preston, but it must be in excess of 30 years since we have been shopping in Preston together.
We had a mooch around the market and a look in both of the Malls and it was a very enjoyable jaunt.
I suggested we stop off for lunch somewhere, but the parsimonious old B said we could just get a pie or a pasty...and eat it as we walked along.
Now, I was brought up to believe that eating in the street while walking along was not the done thing....bad manners, rude etc......and I can't do it
Eating 'al fresco' is fine if you are sitting down...even eating chips out of the paper is OK as long as you are sitting somewhere.
So he had a pie and ate it while we were walking round...I just let my tummy rumble on until we arrived home...which was after 3pm...too late for lunch and too early for tea.
I explained to him that it would have cost us something like £12 to go on such a jaunt if we had had to pay...so didn't it make sense to have an enjoyable, sociable lunch out?
No answer there came to that thorny little question.
But sometimes you can plant the seed, water it and wait for the flowers.
For the last four weeks we have been heading off to the metropolis that is Manchester...we have had a lovely day out each time...even though it had rained the last couple of times(funny, it doesn't rain in the Arndale, or the shops). My trips do not stand or fall on good weather.
We have mooched round the shops, mentally spending a big lottery win that we haven't had yet.......watching the folk passing by.....listening to the street musicians and the bible banging God Botherers...generally having a very pleasant day out....and better than that I have converted him to a sit down lunch...with a chilled pint of beer for him and a large glass of wine for me......lovely? Yes, but I think that next week, if we go....he should pay!
