The first weekend that we were at Toad Hall himself was really not well.
He had a high temperature, was shaking and shivering and could not get warm.
His chest was raspy and tight.
Had we been at home I would have given him some steam and menthol crystals.
Being away from home he had to make do with hot lemonade and steam taken from an enormous Pyrex jug.
He laid on the sofa feeling very sorry for himself.
I had a bad chest too, but with no temperature.
I couldn't sit in the living room looking at his mouldy face(that sounds really cruel and unfeeling-but I am telling it like it is).
The day was frosty and cold, but with those clear crisp blue skies of a winter day.
I rugged up...put on my waterproof three layer jacket and left him to fester on the sofa.
I took my good camera and set off in what I thought was the general direction of the canal.
It was only a five minute walk away.
Along the route I snapped the Village green, the well and the view of Toad Hall.
Toad Hall......it sounds very grand.
In reality it is a weavers cottage that is 150+years old....Renovated and brought up to date.
Once down by the canal I snapped away with abandon. The water was like glass.....in some places it was frozen over.
The reflections were spectacular.
I walked a good way along the canal bank.
The local canoe club were having their 'Christmas Paddle' to Salterforth.all the canoes(and there were about 12 of them) were decorated.....and the paddlers were in fancy Christmas headgear.....with one young man in an elf suit.
It was all very festive.
After about an hour of walking I turned round and headed for home.
I wanted a warm drink and I needed a wee.
When I got back to the cottage himself was still under the weather......I gave him some paracetamol, some hot lemon and dealt with my own needs and then headed out again.
I hadn't a clue where I was off to.
I ended up at a little footpath near the lower Foulridge reservoir.....Lake Burwain.
I did a bit of a 'Davemac'.....wondered where it would lead.
I followed it anyway.
It was the footpath that goes all the way around the reservoir.
I set off thinking I would just walk a little way.
I spotted some sort of building at the far side of the lake.
I wasn't sure if it was something to do with the waterworks, or what it was.
I thought I would just go a little bit closer to check it out.
Before long I was striding up to it.
It was the boat house of the sailing club.
I was halfway round the lake.
I felt I might as well carry on. The path was very muddy and slippery in places, and at one point there was a heavy downpour of rain mixed with hailstones.
The light over the water changed several times and I was able to take some very interesting pictures of the lake and reflections of the sky.
In no time I was back at the road.
It was almost 4 pm......the light was fading fast and I hurried to get back.
I was hungry.....no lunch......and I was ready for a good brew.
When I checked my pedometer I had clocked up 10 km.....Taken lots of pictures(some of them are in the thread 'today in pictures') and had a very good day.
My chest felt clearer for having the good fresh air.
I was tired, but pleasantly so.
I was glad to have gone out and about and seen something of the countryside.
